Welcome to the English Department of John Carroll University .

You'll find that our department of majors, graduate students, visiting lecturers, and permanent professors is an academically strong group of colleagues in scholarship and study. As a faculty we take pleasure in working to be responsive to our students' requests and needs for courses. We take pride in the wide range of readings and lectures from authors and scholars outside the university.

Our Hopkins Chair in British Literature has been held in the past ten years by notable international scholars and authors. The literature program provides solid and interesting courses which approach English literature both from historical perspectives and in single author courses and genre classes. Our creative writing program is vibrant and extensive in the diversity of genres and in student participation in publication of their own works and in public readings by students of the university.

The university literary magazine, The John Carroll Review, is student written and edited. Our composition and rhetoric program aims to equip students with skills that will serve them well throughout their lives, beyond their academic careers. Graduates from our department have gone on to lives as teachers, lawyers, doctors, scholars, judges, archivists, bankers, curators, editors, playwrights, novelists, poets, critics, chefs, relief workers, social workers, civil servants, librarians, and counselors. We believe that our students are more than the jobs that they will take; they are men and women who will live a life grounded in beauty and service.
