COMPOSITION PROGRAM COURSES
English 111
English 111 instructors are encouraged to teach a standard syllabus, where students are asked to write four major papers and one shorter paper during the semester. One of the goals of English 111 is to teach writing as a means of critical inquiry, stressing the centrality of writing to intellectual life. Because good writing cannot be disassociated from careful reading, you will grapple with a diverse body of interrelated and sometimes difficult readings.
English 112
English 112 is designed to provide students with an opportunity to explore different genres of literature: fiction, poetry, drama. In doing so, students will explore the processes and social implications of reading and writing and understand the complexity and diversity of multiple literary interpretations.
English 114
English 114 asks students to write a number of different expository and critical papers in response to literary or non-literary texts.
English 116
English 116 is designed to provide advanced students with an opportunity to explore various genres, similar to 112. EN 114 students can opt out of EN 116 if they receive an “A” in EN 114 and a passing mark on their writing portfolio, submitted to the composition director and the English department chair.
English 103
English 103 provides additional practice in the reading and writing of expository prose for students who have placed below EN 111. Once students complete EN 103, they then proceed to EN 112.
