Mani founded Manichaeism in Persia in the 3rd century A.D. Mani believed that he was both a prophet and an apostle of Jesus.

Manichees view the body as evil and the soul is good. Ormuzd represents the god of light, the creator of souls; he is considered to be the good god. Jehovah, on the other hand, represents evil and darkness; he is credited with the creation of the material world.

Before his conversion to Christianity, St. Augustine of Hippo was a Manichee.

Much of Manichaeism died out by the 19th century A.D.
