ABSTRACT:

The Mauryan Empire lasted from 322 B.C. until 185 B.C. This period flourished in a number of areas. The art and architecture that was constructed during this era reflect on the Mauryan Empire greatness. King Asoka, who took over power of the empire in 273 B.C. made huge contributions to the Mauryans. He created many different edicts that were composed of ideas regarding religion, the governing of the Empire and the attitude's and behaviors of the people. He also helped to construct many different forms of art and architecture. He had pillars built and stupas created. A famous stupa is the Stupa at Sanchi. One of the famous pillars is the one at Sarnath on which rests the Lion Capitol that is now India's official emblem. The pottery of this empire also made get strides. The coins were yet another facet of the flourishing empire. Symbols were created for the coins that represented a number of different things. Overall there were many great achievements made in the art and architecture field during the Mauryan Period. However, after King Asoka passed away there was a steady decline in the empire due to weaker rulers and a split within the nation. This eventually led to the collapse of the Mauryan Empire.
