Publicly-Traded Securities

Publicly-traded securities, particularly appreciated securities, make wonderful gifts to JCU. You will not realize any capital gain on the gift to the University as you would if you were to sell your appreciated stock. Your gift will be valued on the date the irrevocable transfer to JCU is made by taking the mean of the high and the low of the stock on the date of the gift. Gifts of stock can be made through electronic transfer from your broker to John Carroll’s account at Smith Barney in Cleveland or by delivering stock certificates and executed stock powers to University Advancement.

To Send Securities to JCU:
Send JCU notification of the instructions you gave your broker.  Include the name of the stock, the stock symbol and the number of shares to be transferred.  When shares are transferred from your account into JCU’s account, your name DOES NOT APPEAR on the transfer report.  Therefore, we have no record of who donated the stock.  PLEASE send this vital information by fax, e-mail, or mail to one of the addresses listed below:

1. Please do not sign the back of the securites.

2. Complete an "Irrevocable Stock or Bond Power" form with signature guaranteed. Copy enclosed.

3. Complete a "Security Release" form.

4. Mail the original securities in one envelope and the "Security Release" and "Irrevocable Stock or Bond Power" in a separate envelope to:
