The Program

John Carroll University at Vatican City offers students the opportunity to study in Vatican City while earning John Carroll University academic credit. Classes held specifically for John Carroll University students meet at the Pontificia Universita Urbaniana and will be taught in English by both Urbaniana and John Carroll University professors. This one semester program is ideal for sophomore and junior students. Students can use the courses offered to fulfill the requirements of the John Carroll University academic core.

Living in Rome

Students share apartments located in the center of Rome. The cost of cleaning is included in the cost of housing. Students will be given a food stipend and receive lunch Mondays through Thursdays, which is part of the Room/Board fee. A public transportation pass will facilitate travel in Rome. This pass is also included in the program fee.

  • IC 261 (or IC 261) Italian and Italian American Spirituality through Literature and Film (Core II, S, L, Catholic Studies, Italian Concentration & Elective)

Faculty Director

Dr. Santa Casciani, director of the Bishop Anthony M. Pilla Program in Italian American Studies at John Carroll University, was instrumental in creating the study abroad program at Vatican City. As Associate Professor of Italian Language and Literature at John Carroll University, Dr. Casciani has developed undergraduate courses dealing with Italian and Italian American issues. S he has published extensively in Italian Literature, including work focused on authors such as Dante and Michelangelo. She earned her PhD> in Italian at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, her M.A. in Italian at the Ohio State University and her B.A. in Italian and English at Saint John Fisher College.

Travel Within Italy

Students will begin their intensive language study in L'Aquila. It is here students will be introduced to Italian culture. Student will also participate in an orientation week in Rome. During this orientation students will learn about dining, shopping, transportation, safety and etiquette. Students will also partake in excursions to Tuscany and Northern Italy. In addition to traveling, students will also get together for group meals from time-to-time. A huge Thanksgiving Dinner is sponsored by the Bishop Pilla Program for all the students.

Financial Aid Information

How to Apply

Application packets are available at campus informational meetings and at the Center for Global Education. Completed John Carroll University applications are due on March 15, 2008. A $500.00 non-refundable deposit is due with the Vatican City application.
