Responsibilities |
Description:
We, the People is a congressionally funded curriculum designed to encourage civic education and activism among 5th-12th grade students. At John Carroll University, students enrolled in political science and communication classes provide weekly instruction to 5th and 8th graders in urban schools with constrained resources. Currently 45 students serve as tutors in area schools.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Attend August Graduate Assistant Workshop
- Participate in activities of the Center for Service and Social Action as needed/appropriate to responsibilities
- Facilitate We, the People service learning project by
- supporting the students in their weekly lesson planning sessions;
- providing them with tools and resources to assist them in imagining engaging activities as well as helping students process and make sense of their experiences and reactions to them.
- observing the tutors in the classroom.
- Maintaining relationships with the partner teachers at schools in the greater Cleveland community would also be expected; serving as the liaison between the partner schools, the JCU students and the JCU administration would clarify expectations and outcomes and strengthen the program.
- Facilitating the planning of the We, the People mock congressional hearing held on the JCU campus in May. This “hearing” is really a showcase of what the children have learned and is usually judged by local officials. The graduate assistant would be expected to work collaboratively with various offices on campus to implement and execute the hearing.
- Support additional programs in the Center for Service and Social Action; may include GED Program for JCU Service Employees, ESL program with Our Lady of Lourdes, and/or College Mentoring Program with Cleveland Scholarship Program
