New
5-year BS/MBA Programs in the Sciences
This year six new 5-year BS/MBA programs
are being launched at JCU. The 5-year
programs offer JCU students from the
Sciences the opportunity to continue
their education and earn an MBA degree
with one additional year of study. JCU
students who major in Biology, Chemistry,
Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics
or Psychology are eligible for this
program.
Students will take courses from the
Boler School of Business throughout
their undergraduate education. Each
department in the sciences has identified
a faculty member as a liaison who will
work with students who are interested
in this program. This faculty member
will act as their academic advisor to
answer questions and provide support
and assistance in course selection.
In addition, students will come together
once each semester and hear speakers
from the community talk about career
opportunities for Science MBAs.
In addition to course work students
will be encouraged to participate in
internships during their graduate work.
The internships should offer students
an opportunity to gain valuable work
experience that will blend their science
courses with management experiences.
Traditional MBA programs are two years
in length. However, by taking many of
the first tier business courses in their
undergraduate curriculum, students will
be able to complete the MBA with only
11 additional graduate courses. These
courses are being offered to JCU students
in the 5-year program with a 25% scholarship
discount. Although students will declare
their intent to participate in the 5-year
program either in their freshman or
sophomore year, students will need to
apply for acceptance into the program
in the fall of their senior year. All
applicants will need to take the GMAT
exam as part of the entrance requirement.

Graduate
Student Association Leadership Development
Series
The Graduate Student Association created
and held its first 5-part Leadership
Development Series based upon the book
Heroic Leadership by Chris Lowney. Building
upon the Jesuit tradition of leading
and serving others, the series was designed
to empower students to discover their
own leadership potential, so, in turn,
they can unlock the leadership potential
of those with whom they live, work,
and play in order to create vibrant
places of business, homes, and communities
In an effort to accommodate part-time
graduate students who work full-time,
the series was held on Monday evenings
from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. over the course
of two semesters. During Fall semester
’05, Fr. Howard Gray, SJ kicked
the series off with his talk “Heroic
Leadership”. The following month
Dr. Cynthia Marco-Scanlin, from Career
Services spoke on the topic Self-Awareness:
The Leadership Foundation.

The
Series resumed Spring Semester
’06 with Sr. Mary Ann Flannery,
SC, Communications, speaking on
the topic What’s Love Got
To Do With Leadership?. The following
month, Dr. Lisa Shoaff, Educational
Leadership, spoke on the topic
“Ingenuity. Can You Lead
Without It?” Dr. Shoaff
also invited two students, Molly
Connaughton, Educational Leadership,
and Jane Eigner Mintz, ’06,
Community Counseling, to share
ways they have displayed leadership
by creatively solving issues in
their places of business. The
series culminated with Dr. Sally
Wertheim who spoke on the topic
Heroism and Leadership. Contributed

New
Master of Arts Degree in
Nonprofit Administration
.Are
you ready to become a leader in
the non-profit arena? The Graduate
School at John Carroll University
is launching a new master’s
degree program in nonprofit administration
this fall. The program is designed
as an interdisciplinary plan of
study in the social sciences and
business that will provide you
with practical applied training
for your work in a nonprofit organization.
What sets John Carroll apart?
For over a century, John Carroll
has been educating its students
to become community leaders. This
new program builds on the university’s
long tradition of educating women
and men to lead and serve in a
dynamic world. The university
offers a significant scholarship
to individuals who enroll in the
2006-2008 cohort program making
this non-profit master’s
program a best value in the area.
And
it is a unique program. We have
built this program by talking
with the employers, employees,
and future employees in the nonprofit
world. They told us what they
needed and we created it, a streamlined,
intensive program that emphasizes
case-based learning, team-building,
and networking in a non-traditional
academic environment.
•
This degree is completed in 36
hours of coursework over two years.
• 24 hours are required
in “core courses”
such as a crucial Leadership course,
Ethics in Nonprofits and a unique
Capstone Fieldwork course.
• 12 hours are elected in
“special topics” such
as Strategic Planning, Grantwriting,
Policy Analysis and Organizational
Assessment
• Many courses are offered
in unique, “non-traditional”
ways, often as “hybrid”
courses that sometimes meet on
campus in the evening, and at
other times meet on-line, on the
weekend, on site, or as intensive
“crash courses” in
the summer
Take
your education further than you
imagined! Join us as we start
this incredible program this fall.
