CACREP Survey Summary 2003

Community Counseling and School Counseling program graduates complete an anonymous formal evaluation of their graduate studies following graduation. They are mailed the survey: Graduates' Evaluation of the School (or Community) Counseling Program which gathers data about their perceptions about their studies, experiences and training while at John Carroll University. The survey was first introduced in the school-counseling program in Spring 2001, but has been used in community counseling for a decade. A 5-point Likert scale is utilized where 1 represents poor and 5 represents excellent. The table below provides the mean score for each item. Results from this survey are used in program planning and development and are indicated below. Results of those surveys are as summarized below.

Eighty-nine surveys were collected between fall, 1999 and spring, 2002. Thirty-five program graduates responded to the survey. Twenty site supervisors and 30 employers also responded. The table provides summary data (means and standard deviations) of the responses to each survey item provided by supervisors, employers, and former students (graduate). A copy of the survey is attached for reference. The mean values of the each categorical response are illustrated in the tables below. Each of the survey items was rated utilizing a Likert scale of 1 - 5 with the possible responses as: Don't Know/Not Applicable (1), Never (2), Sometimes (3), Mostly (4), Always (5).

Summary of Mid-Cycle Report

Community Counseling Program at John Carroll University

The Community Counseling program is accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). CACREP accreditation not only provides program area standards for the preparation training of professional counselors but also serves as an indicator of program quality. CACREP accredited programs are expected to periodically review and revise their programs in order to continually improve and adapt to changes in society and within the profession as well as any changes made to CACREP Standards. The Mid-Cycle Report is available for review in the Community Counseling Office.

In 2000, the Community Counseling Program submitted its Mid-Cycle Report in compliance with CACREP Standards. This report addresses any changes in faculty, curriculum, clinical instruction and program operations since the initial site survey and accreditation.

Since the last on-site visit, there have been two changes in the counselor education faculty resulting from the retirement of one faculty member and the death of another. As a result of these changes, a new full-time faculty position was added that is assigned 100% to counselor education. Changes in the curriculum have also been made resulting from CACREP’s on-site visit as well as changes in the laws governing the training and licensing of counselors in Ohio. As a result, the Master’s program in Community Counseling is now a 60 credit hour program. In addition to this change, four clinical courses have been added to the program (HU 571 Clinical Evaluation, HU 572 Clinical Diagnosis, HU 573 Clinical Intervention and Prevention, and HU 574 Clinical Treatment Methods) along with additional sections of the multicultural (ED 453) and psychopathology (PS 457) specifically for our community counseling students.

Information is also included regarding the outcomes of program evaluations as well as a statement of plans for future evaluations and assessment of the Community Counseling Program. The last program evaluation was conducted in 1999-2000, with the next evaluation planned for 2002-2003. The Graduate Studies Committee of the University (composed of all departments having graduate programs), the Department of Education and Allied Studies, and the Community Counseling Program Committee participated in the evaluation. The complete assessment including the results, documentation and assessment cycle is available in the Community Counseling Program office.

Finally, the Mid-Cycle report summarizes improvements made to the program, such as additions to elective courses and/or any innovative achievements. A number of electives have been added to the program such as sports counseling, supervision, biofeedback, post-modern counseling, spirituality, stress management, and victimology. In addition, the program has achieved accreditation by the Ohio Credentialing Board for Chemical Dependency Certification and the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis Certification.
