The ICP is made up of five integrated components, designed to establish ongoing conversations through a menu of face-to-face cohort gatherings, online learning opportunities, an Ignatian retreat, and an international immersion experience. The program spans a period of approximately eighteen months. Every effort will be made to adapt the program to the academic and professional experiences and needs of each participant under the direction of the campus coordinator who will serve as a mentor and guide assigned by the president of each school. Program Orientation: First Principles and Foundation. Participants will attend a three-day gathering to introduce them to: each other as partners in the shared national mission of Jesuit higher education; the program and its goals; and to the intersections of Ignatian spirituality, the history of Jesuit education, and the current apostolic commitments of the Jesuits and their colleagues.
Online Learning: Exploring the Jesuit Educational Heritage. A series of online workshops will be presented throughout the program to facilitate ongoing learning, reflection, integration, and action planning among participants. The workshops will explore topics such as: Ignatius and the first companions;
the movement of the Society into education; Ignatian humanism; contemporary themes of the Society and Jesuit education (e.g. justice, assistancy planning, interreligious dialogue); Jesuit, Catholic higher education; Catholic Social Teaching and option for the poor; and foundational theological concepts.
The Spiritual Exercises. Working with their campus coordinators, participants will arrange an experience of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola or some alternate form of prolonged spiritual reflection adapted to the participant’s religious background. There are a number of options for this component, including regionally and nationally sponsored 8-day retreats or retreats in daily life. Special care is taken when accommodating the needs of non-Christians.
An International Immersion Experience: Women and Men For and With Others. As an orientation to the commitment to justice at the heart of Jesuit education, participants will engage in an international immersion trip to a developing country (most likely Nicaragua or El Salvador), accompanied by preparation discussions and follow-up analysis. Participants may join an experience that is offered through their own campus or one that is sponsored by the ICP.
Capstone Experience in Jesuit Higher Education: Finding God in All Things. At the formal conclusion of the Program, participants will gather in a common location for three days of additional learning, integration, and application of appropriated material through practical leadership challenges, actual mission cases, and the completion of a mission action plan for their work on their own campus.
