PC's and Network

This link will provide you with all of the information necessary to bring a computer on campus, set it up in your Residence Hall, and connect to the John Carroll network.

What to do prior to arriving on campus:

1. Make sure Automatic Updates are turned on

  • Click on Start menu
  • Right click on My Computer
  • Select Properties
  • Then click on Automatic updates tab
  • Select Automatic if is is not already selected
  • Click OK

How to run Windows Update:

  • Launch Internet Explorer browser and go to http://www.windowsupdate.com
  • Click on Scan for updates
  • Click Critical Updates and Service Packs
  • Click Review and install updates and then click Install Now
  • You may see a dialog box asking you to restart your computer after the installation has finished. The updates will not be activated until you restart.
  • Repeat these steps until the number of Critical Updates is zero.

2. Update your Antivirus Software

If the PC already has antivirus software, install the latest updates and run a full scan. Contact your PC or Antivirus vendor if you need help to clean your system.

John Carroll University provides Norton Antivirus software for all students.  We recommend that you do not pay extra for any antivirus software.  Once you arrive on campus, you can get the antivirus software from Information Services to replace the version on your system.

Mac users should contact Apple or their vendor of choice for update instructions.

3. Adware and Spyware

We strongly recommend downloading and using SpyBot Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware. Paid “Professional” versions are available, or free versions can be downloaded for individual use. Be sure to select the update options on both products for maximum protection.

What to do when you arrive on campus:

1. Before Connecting

Before the PC is plugged into any JCU network port or configured to use the wireless network:

a. The Computer Name must be set to the users JCU account name, i.e. jdoe08. If you own more than one PC, additional PCs should use the account name appended by “-1”, “-2”, etc. The Computer Workgroup name must be set to the Residence Hall name, i.e. Dolan, Pacelli, Bernet, etc. Commuters should use “Commuter” for their workgroup name. Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, Computer Name (Properties of Network Identity in Windows 2000) and name your PC and workgroup as outlined above.

b. Any antivirus software previously installed must be removed, and JCU’s enterprise copy of Symantec antivirus must be installed. CDs will be available from the Information Services Helpdesk or Residence Hall offices.

c. A full antivirus scan must be run. If ANY viruses are present, call the Information Services Helpdesk at 216-397-3004 to ensure the system is properly cleaned.

2. Connecting to the Wired Network

Plug the PC into the Yellow or Blue port in your residence hall room using a 10/100base-T Ethernet cable. If you do not have an Ethernet cable, one can be purchased at the University Bookstore or nearly any computer or electronics store.

3. After Connecting

a. It is recommended that the user download SpyBot Search and Destroy, Ad-Aware, and their latest updates if this was not done before the PC was brought to campus. See # 3 in the section “What to do prior to arriving on campus”

b. Once your connection is established, it is your responsibility to abide by all rules and regulations associated with the use of JCU’s network. This includes any and all state and federal laws as well as John Carroll University’s Information Technology Ethics Policy:
