Germs on the Keyboard

Prevention is the key to staying healthy--there are no known cures for colds and flu:  Be proactive and keep your hands, keyboards and mice clean.

Hand sanitizer dispensers are mounted in every computer lab for your protection.  Keyboards and mice are cleaned nightly but you should still take precautions and use the hand sanitizers. Using the hand sanitizer before and after using the keyboards and mice of public computers, and keeping your hands away from your face, will significantly improve your ability to avoid germs and illnesses.

Here is some information for keeping your personal keyboard and mouse clean:

  • Turn off your computer and unplug your keyboard.
  • Pick it up and shake it out.
  • Turn it over and tap it against your desk.
  • Blow out the debris in your keyboard with compressed air.
  • Shake out the keyboard again.
  • Rub each key with a damp (not wet) cloth soaked in isopropyl rubbing alcohol.
  • Use cotton swabs to clean the sides of the keys.
  • Use the brush attachment and vacuum the keyboard.
