What is G-mail?
Gmail is
the Google-powered e-mail service. The service offers built-in
IM, voice and video chat, mobile access, spam and virus
protection, IMAP, POP for each account.

How do I access my JCU G-mail account?
Type gmail.jcu.edu into
your browser to access your account. (DO NOT put
'www' in front of this address.)
How do I log into my JCU G-mail account?
- The first time you access your G-mail account, you must use
your Banner ID as your password. You can reset the password
to one of your choosing.
- Your username will remain the same as it was before the move
to G-mail.
Are there limitations on file
sizes within the JCU G-mail account?
Your G-mail account has 25GB of storage. You can send and
receive mail messages up to 25 MB in size, including attachments.
Am I required to use my JCU G-mail account?
Utilizing the JCU G-mail account guarantees that users will receive
notices and messages from the University.
You can forward mail sent to
the JCU G-mail account to an outside account at your own risk.
Can I change my
JCU G-mail account username?
No. Your account username cannot be changed.
How do I change the "Sent From" name
on my account?
Follow the steps at this link to change
the "Sent From" name on your account.
Can I send and receive e-mail from other
accounts within my JCU G-mail account?
Yes. Follow these steps to add
other e-mail accounts to send and receive mail within your
JCU G-mail account.
Can I merge information from
my Hotmail/Gmail/Yahoo, etc. account to my JCU G-mail account?
To transfer information from one account to another,
users can either manually forward individual messages
to JCU G-mail accounts or perform a bulk merge.
NOTE: We do not currently recommend or support the merging of
JCU G-mail accounts with other
accounts, such as Hotmail, Gmail,
Yahoo, etc. If you choose to use Google's Mail
Fetcher service, you
run the risk of your personal account
being locked for excessive traffic.
Can I import contacts I already have into
my JCU G-mail account?
Yes. See contact
import help for details.
How do I find other JCU e-mail addresses?
Utilize the JCU Online
Directory to find other John Carroll addresses, and as you
send messages from your JCU G-mail account, addresses are automatically
added to your address book.
Are there any issues with setting
up IMAP access on an iPhone/Blackberry to my JCU G-mail account?
To set up IMAP on your iPhone/Blackberry, you must supply your
full Account Username including the @jcu.edu and Account Password.
Before you can use the built-in email application
on your iPhone/Blackberry to retrieve mail from your gmail account you
must log into gmail from a computer and enable IMAP on your gmail
account.
- From a computer log into your JCU gmail account.
- Open the account settings by clicking Settings at the top right
(next to Help and Sign Out)
- In the settings window, select Forwarding and POP/IMAP at the
top
- In the IMAP Access section (should be the 3rd section) select
Enable IMAP if it is not already selected, and click Save Changes
at the bottom.
- You should now automatically be returned to your inbox. You
can sign out of gmail and close your browser at this time if
you wish.
How do I receive
my G-mail messages on my BlackBerry?
The Information Technology Services department will assist in activating your Blackberry on the new system. Call the Helpdesk (ext. 3005) and a ticket will be created.
Are there any issues with using an IPOD to access my JCU
G-mail account?
IPOD touches have to be on the jcuwpa2 network to work
with your JCU Gmail account.
How do I set-up forwarding/vacation
response for my JCU G-mail account?
You can create a vacation
response in your JCU G-mail account that will automatically
reply to anyone who e-mails you.
Forwarding capabilities
are also available within your account settings.
What happens to my existing forwards when
I activate an JCU G-mail account?
If you would like to forward mail sent to your JCU G-mail account
to an outside account (e.g. Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail), you must manually
set the forwards in your G-mail account.
What happens to my JCU Online Directory
entry after account activation?
Your JCU Online Directory entry will remain the same because your
e-mail address remains the same.
Can I use other e-mail applications to read
my JCU G-mail account?
Yes. IMAP and POP
Access is available. A list of supported e-mail
clients and associated configuration settings is also available.
When configuring access, be sure to enter in your full JCU
e-mail address as the user name. For example, a user name would
be jwild13@jcu.edu instead of jwild13.
What if I forget my password?
Contact the John Carroll Helpdesk by: visiting us on the 4th floor
of Rodman with a photo ID, or calling 216-397-3005.
How do I change my password?
You can change
your password within your account settings.
Where can I find additional help and information?
The Google Help Center is
a great resource for all questions and is updated often. The Google
Apps Help Forum also hosts current conversations about known
issues.
Transferring E-mail/Contacts (Optional)
Is there a tool available for transferring
messages and contacts from my current JCU e-mail account to my new JCU G-mail
account?
Yes. If you are using Outlook, Outlook Express, or Thunderbird
as your e-mail application, you are able to download the Google
App Sync for a more convenient message and contact
migration.
Can I transfer messages from a non-John
Carroll mailbox such as Gmail or Yahoo to my new JCU G-mail account?
Yes, you can import messages and contacts from any external account
that supports POP access. First you will need to enable POP access
in the settings section of your external account. Then, follow
the steps below to import messages to your JCU G-mail account:
- Click Settings in the upper-right-hand corner of the mail page,
then click Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
- In the POP Download section, click “Enable POP for all
mail (even mail that's already been downloaded)”.
- In the “When messages are accessed with POP” option,
select “keep JCU G-mail Mail's copy in the Inbox”.
- Click the “Save Changes” button.
- Under Settings, click “Accounts”.
- In the “Get mail from other accounts” section,
click “Add a mail account you own”.
- Enter the full e-mail address of the external account to get
mail from, then click “Next Step”.
- Supply the mail settings for the external account including
the username and password that you use to log in. Keep the default
settings for POP server, port and the SSL connection, then click “Add
Account”.
- You will see the option to send mail from your JCU G-mail account
using the e-mail address of your external account. Click “Finish”.
- The process of fetching your messages can take several hours.
Move any messages stored in personal folders to your Inbox after
all messages in your Inbox have been transferred.
- You can disable the POP settings in both accounts after your
messages have been successfully migrated.
How do I export contacts
from my current WebMail to JCU G-mail?
To export contacts from your John Carroll WebMail account to your
JCU G-mail account, first log into WebMail.
- On the left-hand side of the page, click on "Address Book"
- Click on "Import/Export"
- In the lower portion of the window, use the default selections
and Click the "Export Now" button.
To import these contacts into your JCU G-mail account, follow
the steps at Importing
Contacts.
What is the recommended approach
for transferring e-mail from my current JCU account to my new
JCU G-mail account?
Setup
Outlook 2007 to work with Gmail & Mirapoint for Current
Outlook Users
If you are already an Outlook user, you will find instructions
at the following link to configure your application to see your
JCU Gmail. First ENABLE
IMAP, then click on the CONFIGURATION INSTRUCTIONS link.

Setup Outlook 2007 to work with Gmail & Mirapoint
for First Time Users (these instructions are not for
OUTLOOK EXPRESS)
First login to your JCU Gmail account, then ENABLE IMAP for your
account using this link-

Then click Save Changes at the bottom of the screen.
Next, you must configure Outlook with settings to point to your
JCU Gmail account and to your Mirapoint account. Once Outlook
is configured with both account settings, you can drag the messages
you want to move from your Mirapoint Inbox to your JCU Gmail Inbox.
The first pass through these instructions will setup your JCU Gmail
account. The second will setup Mirapoint.
If you are setting up Outlook for the first time continue start
at step 2,
otherwise continue at step 4
- In the Outlook 2007 Startup window, select NEXT,
then YES, NEXT
- Skip to step 6
- Select the TOOLS menu, ACCOUNT SETTINGS,
then click the NEW button in the next screen

- Select the Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP, or HTTP option
in the next screen and then the NEXT button
- Select Manually configure server settings or additional
server types at the bottom of the screen and then
the Next button
- Select Internet E-mail option, click Next and
fill in the settings that follow:.
- Settings (Gmail):
- Your Name: first name last name
- E-mail Address: username@jcu.edu
- Account Type: select IMAP
- Incoming mail server: imap.gmail.com
- Outgoing mail server: smtp.gmail.com
- User Name: your JCU Gmail username@jcu.edu
- Password: your JCU Gmail password
- Click the
button, then the OUTGOING
SERVER tab. Use the settings below.
- Next click the ADVANCED tab and input the settings from the
following image
- For your JCU Gmail setup, make sure the fields in the above
window match the settings shown
- Your settings are finished, Click OK > Next > Finish.
- Restart Outlook
- Complete Pass 1 if you need to setup Mirapoint also, otherwise
skip to Step 9.
Pass 2 (if necessary)
If you need to setup Outlook to read your Mirapoint account also,
start Outlook again and repeat steps 4 through 7. Use the
following information for the Settings in step 8:
Settings (Mirapoint):
- Your Name: first name last name
- E-mail Address: username@jcu.edu
- Account Type: select IMAP
- Incoming mail server: mirapoint.jcu.edu
- Outgoing mail server: mirapoint.jcu.edu
- User Name: your JCU e-mail username@jcu.edu
- Password: your JCU e-mail password
- Click the
button, then the OUTGOING
SERVER tab. Use the settings below.
- Next click the ADVANCED tab and input the settings from the
following image
- For your Mirapoint setup, make sure the fields in the above
window match the settings shown
- Your Mirapoint settings are finished, Click OK > Next > Finish.
- Restart Outlook
- Your are now set to drag & drop from your Mirapoint
account to your JCU Gmail account.
Security and Privacy
Is my JCU G-mail account secure
and private?
Google has promised to uphold a strict privacy policy and to always
treat your personal information with the utmost care and security.

that John Carroll University student data is subject to the Family
Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) when in Google's possession.
How is my personal
data used?
Google's computers process the information in your account for
the purpose of providing an effective service (e.g. putting mail
into folders, maintaining contact lists, etc.). See above for
