Office 2007
Status: Office
2007 has been tested and deployment to the campus office systems
will start in Summer 2008. Office 2007 will be installed
on all new systems. After the installation of the summer
systems, Office 2007 will be deployed by department to the rest
of the campus. As part of the deployment process, Office
2003 will be removed. Only
the Office 2003 applications will be removed, your documents
will remain intact. Any document created
in an Office 2003 application is fully compatible with the corresponding
Office 2007 application. Documents
created in Office 2007 can be accessed in Office 2003 using the
Compatibility Pack detailed below. Access databases may be an exception to the backward compatibility. Contact your database designer for clarification on this point.
Classrooms and labs will offer Office 2007 on the
desktops with Office 2003 being available via
Citrix.
Please contact the HelpDesk, x3005, if you have any
questions.
System requirements for upgrading to Office 2007
The Microsoft minimum system requirements will let Office 2007 operate, but usually so slowly as to be more frustrating than useful. We have found the following minimum requirements are necessary for effective Office 2007 processing:
- a 2 gigahertz computer (all of our ThinkCentres meet this qualification)
- 1 GB RAM
If your system needs additional RAM, contact the HelpDesk for pricing, then send a purchase requisition for the desired amount to Information Services. Your RAM will be installed as quickly as possible.
Office 2007 uses different file formats than Office 2003 - Compatibility
Pack available
In order to open Office 2007 documents using Office 2003 or Office XP,
you need to install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for
Word, Excel and PowerPoint 2007.
Once the compatibility tool is installed on your system, you
will be allowed to open Office 2007 documents with Office 2003
or Office XP in the same manner your use to open any document.
This tool is currently installed on all lab machines.
