GMail

We are pleased to announce that beginning February 2012 we will be replacing the existing employee and departmental email and calendaring systems with the Google Apps system.  This is the same system all JCU students and Alumni began using in 2009, and there are already over 100  faculty, staff and administrators who have Gmail accounts.  Moving to this  new system provides many enhancements over the current systems including:

  • More storage space – 25 GB for each account!
  • A unified calendar platform for faculty and students
  • Collaboration tools to improve communication among all campus members
  • Access from anywhere, anytime
  • Enhanced filtering for spam and phishing email, reducing the risk of blocked messages
  • A great web interface and the ability to continue using existing clients like Outlook

To provide a smooth transition, especially for shared calendar users, Information Technology Services (ITS) will migrate each department as a group.   Step by step instructions are available at a link below for those who wish to move themselves, and the ITS Desktop Support group will be assisting individuals desiring a hands-on migration.  Academic departments will be given priority for migration, as it is our goal to transition all faculty during the months of February, March, and April. 

Online and in-person training will be offered beginning the week of February 20th.  Training schedules and links to online training will be updated on this site as the migration proceeds.

Recommended Google Email Practices: JCU’s agreement with Google includes basic email, calendar, and contact functionality.  Employees may use additional features at their own discretion and at their own risk.  Examples include Google Drive and Google Reader, among others.  ITS will not be responsible for content, technical support, or correspondence from third parties that may result from use of these non-supported features.  Employees should use these additional features with caution.  All employees are still required to adhere to the overall ITS policies on appropriate use of JCU computing resources.
