Description:
AntiVirus Software is required to be installed and running on all computers in order to gain full Internet access. If the Clean Access Agent fails to detect qualifying AntiVirus software you'll be prompted to install Symantec AntiVirus Corporate.
You are currently being placed in a Temporary Role with limited network access to perform the necessary updates. Depending on which updates are missing, you may be required to perform several reboots.

Q: What can happen if my system is not protected?
A: Viruses can do a wide range of things. They can be harmless and simply pass around annoying messages, or they can be very destructive and wipe out all of your data. Most of the time when there is a problem with access to the internet, it is because of an infected PC attacking a system on the Internet, thus blocking legitimate internet access.
Q: How much does AntiVirus software cost?
A: Nothing. Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition is provided free of charge to all current John Carroll students. Thus, Symantec is the only AntiVirus software supported by the John Carroll Helpdesk.
Q: I'm running McAfee or TrendMicro AntiVirus, is this considered "qualifying AntiVirus" software?
A: Yes, however, John Carroll can only provide support for Symantec. For other vendors the helpdesk cannot assist in resolving problems associated with network access. The best option is to uninstall any other AntiVirus application and install Symantec. Click Start>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs. Select your current AntiVirus program from the list, and follow the instructions to remove it. Click here for instructions on how to install Symantec onto your system.

Symantec Corporate Installation Instructions:
(*NOTE* you must be logged in as administrator or an account with equivalent permissions)
Click here to download and install Symantec Corporate.**This installation requires the use of Internet Explorer**
Click the button that says Install Now.


An ActiveX control is needed to launch the installer, you will see a notification indicating that it needs to be installed.
Click on the Information Bar and select Install ActiveX Control.
A download progress window will come up similar to the one below.

When the download is complete, the installer will begin preparing itself.
When finished Symantec will prompt to update your antivirus definitions. Click Next to begin the update.
A download progress bar will indicate the update status.
When the updates have been successfully downloaded, you will see a screen similar to this one. Click Finish to complete the update process.

You may see a warning that your virus definitions are out of date. If you completed LiveUpdate as instructed above, you may ignore this warning and click Close.
Return to the Cisco Clean Access Agent and click Next. If, after the install, you still fail, click CANCEL on the agent and RELOGIN. If there are additional steps that need to be taken before you can access the network, you will be given instructions on what to do. |
