Cable Television

Students must supply their own television and coax cable cord. The length of this cable can vary, based upon the residence hall you are in, and how far away you locate your television from the outlet.  If you are not already sure of the length you will need, we recommend a 25' cord to be safe.

Cable Television lineup subject to change.

When you first plug in your television, by default, it will only access channels 2-13. You may also notice this if you have just returned from break or your television was unplugged for any length of time.  If this is the case, you will need to reprogram your television to the Cable setting, and may also need to instruct your television to search for new channels after changing to the cable setting. Most televisions have a "search for new channels" feature.

We recommend that you use your remote to do some on-screen menu programming.  Search through the menu options for SETUP, and then look for something like "ANTENNA".  The antenna (or SIGNAL) should be set to "CABLE" and not AIR.  If it is set to AIR, it will only allow you to receive up to channel 13.  Once it is set to CABLE, you will get all of the channels.  Every television uses different designations, so you might need to poke around for a while until you find what you are looking for.

After you have the antenna set correctly, use the on-screen menu to do an "AUTO PROGRAM" (or "Search for New Channels"), which will store the channels for you.  If you are still having trouble, consult your owner's manual for proper instructions, or see contact information below.

Cable Television Trouble

If after hooking up your coax cable from the outlet to your television, and you have a poor signal or no signal at all, there are a few possible causes.

Possible Causes:

1)  Coax cable is not securely tightened on both ends (back of television and at the wall connector).  In this case, make sure both ends are snug, then check signal again.
2)  Coax cable, center conductor (copper wire) is bent or broken off.  Make sure it is straight before connecting to either end.  If it is broken, you will need to replace the coax cable.

3)  Wall connector is loose and spins when trying to attach coax cord.  This will result in a poor connection.
4)  Wall connector has paint covering much of the barrel and keeps you from tightening the coax cable securely.

If you have tried to correct the problem, but are still having trouble and need assistance, click on the Cable Television Trouble link, or call ext. 4664 to report the problem.
