Phone Service |
|
The John Carroll University phone system
combines Faculty, Staff and Students on the same system.
One of the many advantages this provides is the ability
to reach anyone on campus by merely dialing a four
digit extension. In addition, there are other features
of this new telephone system similar to those found
in many homes, such as call waiting, voicemail and
call forwarding. However, these features, while similar
in function to your home phone, require different steps
here at John Carroll to activate and use properly.
So read the following instructions carefully. They
provide detailed instructions of how to take advantage
of all these useful features. |

Advantages to Using the Room Telephone Service
- Free unlimited local, toll free, and campus calls
- A clear and strong signal at all times
- Keep your cell phone on charge and save minutes too
- Give your room telephone number to those that you might
not necessarily want to know your private cell phone number
(filter private from non-private calls)
- Cell phone numbers are not published, but room phone
numbers are, so it is easier for one of your professors
(or office staff member) to look up your room telephone
number in order to contact you via the telephone
- Free individual voice mail accounts, with unlimited message
capacity, and accessible from anywhere
- Accurate location information if Emergency 911 call is
placed

What Type of Phone Can I Bring? |
 |
- All corded models of analog telephones
- Cordless phones that are 900 Mhz or 5.8 Ghz
- 2.4 Mhz models must be branded as "digital" (DSS or FHSS),
or they will interfere with the wireless computer network!

Basic Dialing Instructions |
 |
- Campus Calls: To reach an office or
residence hall on campus, simply dial the four digit extension
number.
- Local Calls: For local calls, dial 9,
then the seven digit telephone number. If the call is in
a different area code, but is still a local call, dial 9,
1,
the area code, then the seven
digit number. If you are
unsure if the call is local, try both local dialing procedures
first. If you can connect, then the call is local. If you
cannot connect, then the call is most likely a long distance
call, and you will need to use a calling card or cell phone
to complete the call.
- Toll Free Calls: For toll free calls,
dial 9, then 1, then 800-xxx-xxxx,
1-888, 877, 866, etc.
- Long Distance: To
place domestic long distance, international, or directory
assistance calls, you will need to use your own prepaid
calling card, credit card, or personal cell phone.
- 9-1-1 Emergency Services: In case
of an emergency, dial 911 or 9 (outside line), then 911 (either
way will work) and you will be connected to the local Public
Safety Answering Point (PSAP). When your call is answered,
identify your emergency. Your location should automatically
be displayed to the dispatcher. If you accidentally
dial 911, DO NOT HANG UP. Stay on the line and notify
the dispatcher of the error. If you hang up, you will
receive a call back.
