VPN Instructions

There are two basic ways to connect:

A.  Cisco VPN client (traditional VPN client)

1. From a computer on JCU's campus, download the following client, jcu.bat, and jcu.pcf and save them to a CD, Zip disk or USB Flash Drive:
   • Cisco VPN Client (Mac OS X)
   • Cisco VPN Client (Windows 7 -- 64 bit)
   • Cisco VPN Client (earlier versions of Windows ie. XP -- 32 bit)
   • jcu.bat file
   • jcu.pcf file (download this file with a right click, select "save target as", then select appropriate device.  Unfortunately, IE defaults to appending ".txt" to the end of plain-text files.  Choose "all files" dropdown file type rather that the default "text document" when saving through IE.)
2. Copy these three files to your remote PC's desktop.
3. Double-click on the Cisco VPN Client to install it on your remote PC.
4. Run jcu.bat (if this does not work, create a "Profiles" directory in "C:\Program Files\Cisco Systems\VPN Client\" and copy jcu.pcf into it.) 
5. Run the Cisco VPN Client after connecting to the Internet via your modem, DSL or Cable, choose the JCU Connection Entry, and click Connect.   This can be found in Start -> All Programs -> Cisco Systems -> Cisco Systems VPN Client -> VPN Client.
6. Use your Campus Domain username in the format (CAMPUS\username) and password to log in when prompted.  (ACADEMICS\username for students)
   

B.  WebVPN

1. Using Internet Explorer, connect to https://marvin.jcu.edu. Make sure you use https.
2. You will see the following page when connecting for the first time…
   
3. Go to the Tools menu -> Internet Options and on the security tab select Trusted Sites.
   
4. Click the Sites button and add https://marvin.jcu.edu to the list of trusted websites.
   
5. Click Close, then OK.
6. In the browser, click “ Continue to this website (not recommended). ”
7. At the top of the browser, click on the red “certificate error” message.
   
8. At the bottom of the window that pops up, click “view certificates.”
9. In the Certificate window, click “Install Certificate”.
   
10. In the Certificate Import Wizard, click Next.
    
11. For the certificate store, browse for and select “Trusted Root Certification Authorities” as the location to place the certificate. Click Next. Click Finish. Click Yes for the security warning. Then OK and OK.
    
12. Finally, close Internet Explorer. Then reopen it and go back to https://marvin.jcu.edu.
13. When you login, you must put the domain name in front of your username.
