In addition to the usual Hungarian line up of violins and cimbalom, the band will include a woodwind player performing on the tárogató, an instrument resembling a wooden soprano sax with a haunting sound. About GÁZSA: The Gázsa Band was formed in 1992 by some of the best folk musicians in Hungary who have spent years studying and learning authentic village music from famous masters of folk music, who, in most cases, lived in remote rural areas. The bands takes its name from its leaders nick-name, István Papp Gázsa. He was born and raised in Transylvania and has played with many giants of Hungarian folk music. The Carpathian Mountains surround an area of Central Europe, home to many ethnic groups, each possessing wonderful folklore, especially in the areas of folk music and dance. Hungarians Romanians, Slovaks, Serbs, Croatians, Ukrainians, Gypsies and others have all preserved their wonderful folk treasures. The most pure and archaic forms of music and dance may be found in Transylvania, now part of Romania. In these areas, Hungarians, Romanians and Gypsies live together in many villages; their unique ethnic culture may be witnessed even today. The performers in the Gázsa Ensemble have explored the beauty and depth of all traditional cultures in the Carpathian Basin in great detail. In their performance, they show the music and dance of a variety of ethnic groups and offer a memorable cross-section of the colorful ethnic music and dances of all people living in Central Europe. The Gázsa Ensemble has accompanied the famous Budapest Ensemble for a decade. Together, they have performed in many countries, including the United States, Canada and Mexico, to critical acclaim. In their 2000 North American tour, The Ensemble was praised by The New York Times as admirable and compelling; the New York Newsday noted superb musicians lively, seductive music; The Boston Globe praised their music to be pulsating; and in the Chicago Sun Times, the groups fiddlers were called irresistible and the musicians superb. The Ensemble will consist of six musicians and two dancers. The instruments will nclude violins, viola, bass, cimbalom [125 string Hungarian hammered dulcimer] clarinet , bagpipe and tárogató (an instrument resembling a wooden soprano sax). A professional dancing couple from the Budapest Ensemble, wearing the gorgeous folk costumes of several geographic areas, will also add to the performance. Mp3 samples of Gázsas music can be heard at http://www.passiondiscs.com/e_pages/hung_e/feszcd04.htm

Over a decade ago in Eastern Transylvania's largest city, four young Hungarian musicians joined forces to create the USZTURU Ensemble, with a common goal to ensure the survival of traditional Hungarian music for lifetimes to come. They have traveled the villages of their homeland to study from the last great generation of authentic village musicians, a dying breed whose art form can only be carried into the future by bands such as ÜSZTÜRÜ . The group has toured throughout Europe and North America with astounding success, capturing the world music scene's attention with its presentation of Transylvania's dance-inducing virtuosi string music. The group was a great hit when World Music at INSIDE brought them to Cleveland in 2000, were certain they will be every bit as good in their return engagement. More about the group: ÜSZTÜRÜ was founded in 1992 by young Hungarian musicians while attending university in Kolozsvár [Cluj]. They were born in Transylvania and had close connections to the communities where Hungarian folk music was still a living tradition. They witnessed first hand how authentic, traditional folk music, played on acoustic instruments, has disappeared from village life, having been displaced by electronic instruments & Western pop music. The members of the ÜSZTÜRÜ were fortunate to learn and play with the greatest masters of Transylvanian music: Sándor Fodor [Neti] and Ferenc Árus from Kalotaszeg; Kodoba Béla and his family from Magyarpalatka, István Ádám [Icsán] from Szék; István Jámbor [Domnezu] and Ferenc Mezei [Csángáló] from Szászcsávás. Some of them, alas, have passed away. Many years of playing with these folk artists & studying, collecting their music makes the members of the ÜSZTÜRÜ special bearers of Transylvanian Hungarian music. They are dedicated to assuring the continued survival of a folk art form, which can rarely be found even in its indigenous surroundings. The Ensemble is also at home in performing all Hungarian folk musical dialects from the Austrian border to the Eastern slopes of the Carpathian Mountains. The members of ÜSZTÜRÜ manage to share with American audiences their enthusiasm for authentic Hungarian music and convey its soulful melodies, fiery emotions and versatile styles as they have learned from the musics great masters. Featuring: István Moldován, violin Levente Major, violin József Szász, brácsa Lõrinc Szász, bass.

ÖSZTÖNDÍJAK MAGYARORSZÁGI TANULÁSRA:
Akkor tudjuk nyugati magyarságunk fennmaradását
elõsegíteni, ha a külföldön
történõ magyar nevelés
kiegészítéseképpen magyarországi
élményeket és tanulási lehetõségeket
biztosítunk fiataljainknak. Két magyarországi
tanulási lehetõséget lehet a Külföldi Magyar
Cserkészszövetségen (KMCsSz) keresztül
megpályázni: Középiskolai tanulmányi
év: Öt nagynevu egyházi középiskola
vállal egy évre magyar származású
vendégdiákokat: a szegedi piarista gimnázium, valamint
a nagykorösi, pápai, kecskeméti és szentendrei
református gimnáziumok. Mind az öt iskola szeretettel
fogad bármilyen felekezethez tartozó diákot. A
diák részt vesz az iskola rendes tanulási és
egyéb programjain. Az iskola kollégiumában vagy az iskola
által kiválasztott családnál lakik. Az iskola
egyik pedagógusa mentorként foglalkozik a programon
résztvevõ külföldi diákokkal. A diákokat
a KMCsSz magyarországi képviselõje fogadj a reptéren,
eljuttatja az iskolákba és kapcsolatot tart velük. A
magyarságörzõ célt figyelembe véve, az iskola
a tandíjat, lakást és étkezést
önköltségi ár alatt, évi US$500-ért
biztosítja. Balassi Bálint Intézet: A KMCsSz
kérésére a magyar Oktatási Minisztérium
ösztöndíjat ad magyar származású, 18.
életévüket betöltött fiataloknak, egy éves
tanfolyamon való részvételre a budapesti Balassi
Bálint Intézetben. Az ösztöndíj fedezi a
tandíjat, az Intézetben való lakást és
havi 16 000 forint juttatást. A tanfolyamon a diák fejleszti
magyar nyelvismeretét és megismerkedik a magyar
kultúrával (történelem, földrajz, néprajz,
muvészettörténet, stb.). Az Oktatási Minisztérium
és a Balassi Bálint Intézet
megbízásából a KMCsSz pályázat
révén választja ki és javasolja az
ösztöndíj nyerteseit. A tanfolyamon választható
egyes tantárgyakra egyetemi kreditpontok is kaphatók. A 2004.
szeptemberében kezdõdõ tanfolyamra 2004. január
30-ig kell a pályázatokat benyújtani.
