A Lecture-Demonstration on the Art of Decorated Eggs
|
Although made for Spring and Easter celebrations, the origins and meaning of the decorated egg reach far back into the mist of time. For thousands of years, eggs have been regarded as powerful symbols of life and the natural cycles of renewal. Throughout much of Europe, eggs were decorated and given away as token gifts in spring festivals celebrating the return of the sun.
With the onset of Christianity, these ancient customs were absorbed into
religious celebrations of Easter. This celebrated tradition has been
kept alive by generations of Hungarians who pass on their cultural heritage
to the present day. This constant flow of artistic ability from their ancestors
is revitalized again and again.

A rich assortment of traditional decorated eggs was on display at the Cleveland Hungarian Heritage Museum at the former Richmond Mall location, from March 28 to May 2, 1998.
Our Easter Egg Workshop taught participants the art of decorating eggs with ancient designs and a variety of techniques that are uniquely Hungarian!
