Apps (software) for the iPad

Apps are pre-installed on the iPads loaned to JCU students. The specific apps installed depend on the JCU course. Apps that have been installed in the past include those listed below.

Safari web browser (Apple)

The Safari app is installed on the iPad prior to shipment from Apple.

iPad suite of apps

Safari, Mail, Photos, Videos, YouTube, iPod, iTunes, App Store, Maps, Calendar, Contacts, Notes, Settings. Check this page for videos that introduce the apps listed above in bold and also iBooks, Keynote, Pages and Numbers.

Note: the link above opens a page of videos on the apps for iPad 2. The iPads issued to students by the University are iPad 1. The iPad 1 does not include the apps Facetime, GarageBand and iMovie, which are apps added to the built-in list for iPad 2.


 

iBooks (Apple)

This software opens documents in EPUB and PDF format. Annotation tools are available for documents in EPUB format, which allow the student to highlight text and add notes.

Keynote (Apple)

Presentation software similar to PowerPoint. This is a productivity app which allows the authoring and display of presentations on the iPad. The software includes the VGA out feature, permitting the connection of the iPad to a projector or external display for group viewing.

Dragon Dictation (Nuance Communications)

Voice recognition software - records your speech and converts it to text. Requires Internet connection. Could be useful in situations where the student needs to enter more than just a few words into a text document and when it is not desirable to use the iPad keyboard. GoodReader (Good.iWare Ltd.)

Opens documents of various types for viewing but not for editing (except annotation tools for PDF). Supports display of large PDF and TXT files, but can also handle other types such as:

• MS Office - .doc, .ppt, .xls and more
• iWork'08/'09
• HTML and Safari webarchives
• High resolution images
• audio and video

Note Taker HD (Software Garden)

This handwriting app may be useful for students who would like to take class notes using the iPad, but don't want to enter text with the iPad keyboard. The software is uniquely designed so that large text, written with the finger or a stylus, is reduced in size and copied to the digital paper. The reduction function makes it possible to fit more handwritten text on a page of digital paper. The handwritten notes can be emailed to an account in PDF format.

Dictionary.com (Dictionary.com)

Pandora Internet radio (Pandora Media, Inc.)

Pandora offers a wide variety of music, including classical and opera. Customized music play lists can be created for listening on your computer or the iPad. To create an account and listen using your computer, use the link below.
