iPad Backup

 

There is the remote possibility that your iPad will crash during the semester, resulting in loss of documents. You should have some strategy to protect your documents from loss, especially any notes or papers you prepare on the iPad. Documents can be backed up individually or through a complete back up of the iPad. The iPad issued to you by JCU was prepared using a university iTunes account. Therefore, FULL iPad back ups should be done using the university iTunes account. The user name and password for this account cannot be shared with students. If you would like to have a complete back up of your iPad done, please bring the iPad to Dr. La Favre in the Language Learning Center (OC 101). While in Italy, we will have available a laptop computer that can be used to back up your iPad at any time. This is a light weight laptop that will be carried by Dr. La Favre.

Below are your options for backing up individual documents:

1. Back up your documents using Apple's free iCloud service - iCloud can be configured to automatically save documents you create with or store associated with the Pages, Keynote and Numbers apps. In addition, you may configure GoodReader to copy documents to iCloud for safekeeping. You can also store copies of Photos stored in the Photos app. Keep in mind that you need wireless internet access to upload or retrieve backup files. While in Italy you will not always have access to the internet and/or may have to pay a fairly high price for access. Furthermore, we have not tested iCloud in Italy yet and the service may not be available there.

2. Back up your documents to your computer. Documents associated with apps that do file sharing (Pages, GoodReader) can be copied to your computer using iTunes. Consult this page for instructions.

3. Email copies of your documents to yourself. Some of the iPad apps include an email function, which allows you to email a copy of a document to any email address (Pages, Keynote, Numbers, GoodReader, Photos, Notes). If you use the annotation tools in GoodReader to add notes to a course document, those annotations can be included in the PDF document that you email. The email function requires wireless internet access. While on campus you must use the secure wireless network for email functions (see instructions here for connecting to jcuwpa2).

4. Back up your files to the cloud (other than iCloud). The Dropbox app is installed on your JCU-issued iPad. If you don't already have a Dropbox account, create one at this web site:

Instructions for uploading documents to Dropbox from GoodReader

iCloud is a convenient way to back up your documents because it is done automatically in the background. However, if you would like to access iCloud documents on your computer, you will discover that there are limitations. GoodReader documents stored on iCloud are accessible only with Apple computers running the latest OS X operating system (Lion). An alternative is to copy your GoodReader documents to Dropbox. Files stored in Dropbox can be accessed using any computer (Apple or PC). Below are directions for uploading copies of GoodReader documents to Dropbox. The directions assume you already have a Dropbox account and have logged on to that account using the Dropbox app on the iPad.

Note that these directions are for a manual back up method. If you will be backing up your files frequently, you may wish to configure a Sync method - instructions here

1. Start the GoodReader app on your iPad

2. Select Manage Files

3. Select the file you wish to upload to Dropbox

4. Touch the ... Open in... button

5. Select Send file "as is" to preserve all features of annotations in PDF files

6. Select Dropbox

a

 

7. Your iPad now loads the document in the Dropbox app. Select the folder where you want to save a copy of the file on the Dropbox server.

8. Touch the Upload button. A copy of the file will now upload to Dropbox

9. After upload is complete, the file will be listed as a recent upload.

10. Now on your computer, go to www.dropbox.com and log in. You should find your uploaded document.

Sync GoodReader Files with Dropbox

Before you can sync files, you must establish a connection to the Dropbox server.

1. On Connect to Servers touch the Add button.

2. Select Dropbox

3. Enter the e-mail address associated with your Dropbox account and touch the blue Add button. Your Dropbox server connection should now appear under Connect to Servers.

4. Touch the Done button

Configuring the Sync

1. Touch your Dropbox server connection under Connect to Servers

2. Enter your password and touch the OK button

3. Select the folder on Dropbox that you want to sync

4. Touch the Sync button

5. The dialog below will appear. Touch the Proceed button.

6. Select the folder in GoodReader that you want to sync with Dropbox ( in this example, both the Dropbox folder and GoodReader folder are named IC363).

7. Touch the Download here & Synchronize button

8. Set the desired Sync Parameters. "Download only" will sync files down from the Dropbox server, but will not upload files from your iPad to the Dropbox server. Delete local and remote files, if on, will result in deletion of a file if the copy is deleted. For example, if Delete local files is set to ON, then if you delete the same file in Dropbox, the file on the iPad will be deleted. The safe settings would be both local and remote file deletion OFF. After you have have set parameters, touch the blue Sync button. Your Sync is now configured. To sync your files, touch the Sync button on the Web Downloads utility bar.
