Dr. La Favre has a number of avocations including astronomy, building musical instruments, and the acoustics of bar percussion instruments (marimba, xylophone, vibes and glockenspiel). The photo above is a 5-octave marimba that Dr. La Favre constructed for his daughter, who is currently working toward a Master's in percussion performance at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Lyon, France. He has studied the acoustics and tuning of the marimba and has an extensive online publication covering tuning theory.

Dr. La Favre has been an amateur astronomer since 1985. In 1993 he constructed a small observatory in his backyard, which currently houses a 14 inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope equipped with a computer-controlled mount and CCD imaging system. You can take a look at some of his astrophotographs at his personal web site.
