Downloading a Podcast with Doppler

If you would prefer not to use iTunes to manage your podcasts, you can use Doppler, which is available for free at:

http://www.dopplerradio.net/

1. Download and install Doppler. During the installation, you will be asked to specify a folder where you want the media files saved.

2. Doppler can register the downloaded media files to the software you use to manage media. If you use the library in Windows Media Player to copy media to your portable media player, then select it as the default media player, as illustrated below.

3. After installation of Doppler is complete, open the software. You should see the application window, as illustrated below.

4. Click the Add feed button in the lower right corner of the application window.

5. The Feed dialog box will open. In the URL slot on the Main tab, enter the URL to the podcast. Also place a check mark in the box to the left of This feed may contain..... Then click the Add feed button.

6. Now the podcast should appear in the list. Click to highlight it as illustrated below.

7. Now click the Retrieve now button at the bottom right of the window.

8. Doppler will now start to download the media in the podcast. When the process is finished, the entry under the Last updated column will list the date, as illustrated below. At this point, the downloaded media have been added to the library of Windows Media Player (or the software you specified as the default media player during installation of Doppler).

9. If you specified Windows Media Player as the default player, open it now and select the Library tab (assuming you have version 10, your window should look like the one below). If you already use Windows Media Player to copy media to your portable player, then you know how to take the process forward from this point.

If the media files include lyrics, you can view the text while the audio plays (lyrics can be any text that enhances the audio content, such as the text of a poem recitation). If you plan to play back the media on your computer, use Windows Media Player if you want to see the lyrics (you can view the lyrics in iTunes but it is not very user-friendly).

Viewing lyrics in Windows Media Player

1. Open Windows Media Player and make sure it is set for Full Mode (View menu).

2. Select Captions & Subtitles in the Play menu and then select On if available.

3. Open the media file (the files will be in the directory you specified during the installation of Doppler - or you can access them from WMP library).

Viewing lyrics with your portable player

If your player is capable of displaying lyrics, then you should be able to display the text. Consult your player manual for directions.
