The Old Librarian's Almanack is a 1909 satire in which fictional 18th-century librarians Jared Bean and his assistant Enoch Sneed revel in the closing of the library for "six weeks or, perchance, two months,"  ostensibly to perform their annual inventory but truly to "read unceasing and unceasing read!" undisturbed by the "importunities" of library users.  Grasselli Library will, with the rest of the John Carroll campus, close its doors from Friday December 23rd through Monday, January 2nd. Unlike Messrs. Bean and Sneed, the library faculty and staff will not be rejoicing over this interruption in service but rather comforted in the knowledge that we are a 21st-century library whose online information resources are always "open" to users via the library's home page. Library staff will be back on duty during the first two weeks of January to meet your academic resource needs in-person, by phone (216-397-4234), text, e-mail, IM, and Chat. For now, we wish everyone success in final exams and a very happy Christmas holiday. We look forward to welcoming you back to Grasselli's service-rich environment in the coming spring semester.

New Databases and Other Announcements
Ancestry Library Edition

OhioLINK Music Center
Online Catalog Alert
Featured Biographies

Did you know your OhioLINK borrowing power expanded to include an additional 10 million popular books, CDs and DVDs thanks to a new collaborative program with SearchOhio, a network of 19 public library systems throughout the state

We are excited to share the news that the library is now providing access to the popular genealogy database Ancestry. If you have ever wanted to explore your family tree, this is an essential database. It has records from every United States Census, draft board records for World Wars I and II and, the complete Social Security Death Index, as well as records from the U.K. and German censuses.

The chief difference between the library edition and the personal subscription is that the library edition is a read-only database. You cannot use the information provided to build your own family tree online. You can cut and paste and save records in Microsoft Word.

Take some time to explore this database. Marcy Milota is available to answer questions at (216) 397-4259. She will also be available midday during the week of January 9-13, 2012, to help you search or to answer questions. More details about these drop-in sessions will be provided later.

Ancestry can be accessed on-campus only.

Mango is an online language-learning system that can help you learn languages like Spanish, French, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, German, Mandarin Chinese, Greek, Italian, Russian, and more. It also offers English language lessons if English is not your first language. The system is divided into modules that have clear goals related to conversation and pronunciation. It uses a variety of teaching methods including flashcards, repetition, and cultural notes. It also contains a translation feature.

Mango can be accessed both on- and off-campus.
