DATABASES
These electronic databases, selected from the library's collection of databases, could be especially useful in studying and researching topics in Biology. They range over general and specific areas.
- Academic Search Premier
Abstracts and indexes almost 4500 journals. Contains full text for nearly 3500 scholarly publications in nearly every area of academic study. This is a good place to start for any topic.
- Agricola (1970-present)
Contains bibliographic records for journal articles, monographs, theses, patents, software, audiovisual materials, and technical reports from the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Library.
- Biological Abstracts (1980-present)
Contains bibliographic references and abstracts from approximately 5500 international journals in biology and medicine.
- BioMed Central
An independent online publishing house committed to providing immediate free access to the peer-reviewed biological and medical research it publishes.
- Electronic Journal Center: Life Sciences
The Electronic Journal Center: Life Sciences (OhioLINK) includes the full text of many online research journals in the life sciences.
- Environment Complete (1980-present)
Contains records from 1200 domestic and international journals going back to the 1950s, as well as 100 monographs.
- Faculty of 1000
A research service that comprehensively highlights and reviews the most interesting papers published in all the biological sciences, based on the recommendations of over 1400 selected leading researchers.
- Garden, Landscape & Horticulture Index
Indexes more than 300 core journal titles about plants and gardens. Appropriate for gardening enthusiasts, students, and professionals.
- JSTOR
JSTOR provides full text of back issues of core journals, including six ecology journals. To limit your search to the ecology journals, scroll down and check off "ecology."
- MEDLINE (2001-present)
MEDLINE is the National Library of Medicine's online database that contains 12 million references to journal articles in the health sciences. Information in the database comes from 3,900 journals in 40 different languages. More than half of these journals are published in the United States, and almost 90% of the current references are to articles in English.

- MEDLINE (1950-1965) (OLD MEDLINE)
"OLDMEDLINE"contains citations to articles from international biomedical journals. The citations were originally printed in hardcopy indexes. OLDMEDLINE contains only journal article citations. No abstracts are available.
- Oxford Reference, Biological Sciences
Reference books on Biological Sciences. Includes or has links to full text.
- Oxford Reference, Earth & Environmental Sciences
Reference books on Earth and Environmental Sciences. Includes or has links to full text.
- Prokaryotes
The classic reference on bacteriology. Updated three times yearly.
- PubMed
Citations for biomedical articles back to the 1950's from MEDLINE and additional life science journals. PubMed includes links to many sites providing full text articles and other related resources.
- Science Citation Index Expanded (1980-present)
Indexes 5,700 major journals across 164 scientific disciplies, with all cited references captured. Contains searchable, full-length, English-language author abstracts for approximately 70%of the articles in the database.
DIGITAL MEDIA
These are links to audio and video resources available through OhioLINK.
- Borror Laboratory of Bioacoustics Recorded Sounds
Contains digitized recordings of animal sounds from the Borror Laboratory of Bioacoustics at The Ohio State University. Currently, recordings of songbirds (primarily warblers, tanagers, and sparrows) are available. Additional recordings are in process. The collection contains approximately 28,000 recordings of over 1000 species of animals.
- Digital Video Collection: Science
The Digital Video Collection contains full-length educational videos, including many in the life sciences. The DVC currently includes videos from Ambrose Video and Films for the Humanities and Sciences. More sources will be added.
- Dolphin embryo digitized slides
Part of the OhioLINK Digital Media Center Science Collections, choose NEOUCOM Dolphin Images. Scanned images of histological sections of dolphin embryos. (more…)
- Forestry Digital Photographs
Part of the OhioLINK Digital Media Center Science Collections, choose OAES Forestry Image Collection. Forestry Digital Photographs is a collection of photos of forestry, dating back to the early 20th century. Images portray trees, cultivation, care, and the effects of human activity. Many pictures were taken in Ohio but other states and countries are also represented.
- LANDSAT 7 Satellite Images
LANDSAT 7 Satellite Images provides digital snapshots of Ohio from space, including infrared and true color composite views. New imagery is available every 16 days.
- Reproductive Physiology Animations
Part of the OhioLINK Digital Media Center Science Collections, choose UCCOM Reproductive Physiology Animations. This is a collection of learning modules on human reproduction from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. The modules have animation, and some have sound. To view the modules in the sequence, use Browse by Title, which is in order by module number. There are gaps in the existing set; the complete collection will be available in March 2005. These animations are played via Macromedia Flash Player, which is pre-installed on most web browsers. Users may download files, for example to insert into a PowerPoint presentation or a Blackboard course. You may select and rearrange modules to fit your need.
