I currently work for Towers Perrin, an
international human resource consulting firm. I am a Fellow of the
Society of Actuaries and am a pension actuary by trade. I discovered
the actuarial profession in 1985 when my father showed me a
Time
magazine article listing actuary as the
second best job in the US at the time (by the way, actuary remains near
the top of these lists even in 2008). Even though I was in elementary
school at the time, I knew what I wanted to be and then subsequently
sought out a university that would teach me the mathematics skills I
needed for the job while also providing me with a well-rounded liberal
arts education. I fondly remember Professor Moreno's statistics
courses, and I credit him with ensuring that I was aware of the timing
and requirements of the first actuarial examinations. I spent many
hours in the JCU mathematics department pouring over practice actuarial
examinations.
I also decided to earn an M.S. in Mathematics and become a graduate
assistant in JCU's Mathematics Department. I owe a lot of my attention
to detail to the rigorous proofs required in Dr. Chen's and Dr.
Stenson's graduate courses. Overall, my JCU experience provided me with
a solid mathematics foundation from which I was able to successfully
complete the actuarial examinations. My years at JCU also helped me to
develop a work ethic that has translated well in the professional
services industry.
