Introduction to Abstract Algebra
Fall, 2008
Text: Elements of Modern Algebra,
6th ed., by Gilbert and Gilbert (Thomson-Brooks/Col e, ISBN
0-534-40264-X)
Course Content: This course introduces
the student to mathematical abstraction, in the context of abstract algebraic
structures. In addition to becoming acquainted with the algebraic structures
of groups and rings and their relation to the more elementary processes
of algebra, the student will engage in critical thinking, problem solving,
and mathematical reasoning in an abstract setting. Major goals of
the course are the development of mathematical maturity and the development
of skills in communicating mathematics. The course thus serves as
background for further study of mathematics or of the application of mathematical
structures. For most students, this is the first post-calculus mathematics
course.
More: Students enrolled in this course are invited to visit the course Blackboard
site for additional information.
