MODERN EUROPEAN STUDIES

Requirements

A. Core of the Concentration:

  • Six hours of language instruction in addition to the six required for the University Core, to be taken in the Modern European language satisfied for the UC (12 hours in same language).  This requirement may be satisfied by civilization and culture or literature courses in the target language.  Students who enter the University with a proficiency above the 200 level may opt out of the additional six hours by passing an advanced language proficiency examination.  Languages to be applied toward the concentration requirement should be those taught at JCU.
  • A topical seminar in Modern European Studies at the 400 level or a senior thesis on a subject relevant to MES.
  • Three courses from the Modern European Studies approved course list in three departments outside the student’s major.

B. Electives of the Concentration

  • Six hours of other courses from the Modern European Studies approved course list.

Note: The MESC recognizes the importance of "foundational coursework" for a richer appreciation of modern and contemporary European developments.  To this end, students may apply up to two courses in Medieval or Early Modern European fields from an approved list to their concentration curriculum.

Studies in Europe

  • Students participating in the concentration are strongly encouraged to undertake study abroad.  This experience might take the form of a short, concentrated study tour, an international summer internship, or either a semester or full year at a European university.

Satisfaction of Requirements by Petition

  • Any course determined appropriate can be applied as an elective. Courses that contain a significant modern or contemporary European content may be applied to MES pending approval.
