Myth and Music

Myth and Music

An annotated listing of musical works
of all kinds
inspired by some classical mythical character
for use by teachers of classical mythology

The original version appeared in Classical World, vol.92, no. 3, January/February 1999 as "Classical Myth in Music."  Permission to incorporate the original list into this web page has graciously been given by the editor of Classical World, Prof. Matthew S. Santirocco. For those who may be interested in a printed copy of the original version, it is still available from Classical World for $5.00.

Since that initial publication over 200 new works have been added to the listing.

One may access the material in any one of three ways.

  1. Those who have the original list may need only to go to "Additions to Original list" above.

  2. All may wish to go to the "Complete Updated List" above.

  3. Those interested in pursuing the subject from the point of view of composers whose works have been inspired by classical mythical characters may go to the "Composers List" above where they will find the name of every composer represented in the complete list along with the mythical character(s) who inspired each of them.

Comments and additions are greatfully solicited and should be sent to poduska@jcu.edu.
