| 'Take Back the Night' concludes with
Clothesline, Tunnel, Silent March |
The
men of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity (above) collected signatures
of those opposed to domestic and sexual violence as the women
of Kappa Delta sorority staffed the Clothesline Project display
today (Apr 27) in the Lombardo Student Center atrium. Tee-shirts
(right) were decorated with anti-violence slogans; relevant
facts and principles were published on "floor posters" (top right).
The event was just one of the activities in support of this
week's theme, "Take Back the Night," to give awareness to domestic
violence and sexual assault and to support survivors of those
crimes. Co-sponsors included the Sociology Association, Developmental
Programming, and the Departments of Sociology and Political
Science.
Activities continue on Thursday (Apr 28) with the multi-media
Tunnel of Oppression (tours from 10 am - 4 pm, open viewing
from 4-8 pm) and on Friday (Apr 29), Wear Purple Day, with a
silent march at 5 pm from Rodman Hall to the LSC steps where
an open mic will give anyone a chance to speak out on the week's
theme.
This year's "Tunnel," facilitated by the Organization of Resident
Assistants, focuses on international oppression, mental illness,
the Middle Easterner’s experience in the US, sexual assault,
gender stereotypes and the GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender)
community. The week began with a demonstration of self defense
and a presentation on sexual assault. |
