| Carter Foundation honors Doug Walton '09; helps to plant 'Seeds of Hope' | ||
The
Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Partnership Foundation has named Doug Walton
'09 a "Carter Academic Service Entrepreneur" for writing
a $1,000 grant awarded in conjunction with College 360° (a NE Ohio
initiative to increase the region's supply of college-educated workers.)On hand last week (Dec 7) to present the Carter certificate of merit was Torie Front, Associate Director of Ohio Campus Compact, an organization of 45 Ohio colleges and universities established to support student and institutional participation in community and public service. She is in the center with Walton and (l to r) Erin McBride '09, Emma Hayes, Campus Minister, and Rachel Giannell '08. Walton, McBride and Giannell have spearheaded a year-long effort to found "Seeds of Hope" as a Big Brother/Big Sister program in which 20 JCU students each will mentor a 6th, 7th or 8th grade pupil from Cleveland's Joseph Gallagher Elementary School. The children there face daunting challenges involving poverty, violence and English proficiency. "The partnerships formed through 'Seeds of Hope' will potentially last through the child's elementary school education," said Emma Hayes, Campus Minister for Christian Life Communities and Immersion Experiences. The $1,000 grant, along with a $500 grant from the Catholic Campaign for Human Development helps bring "Seeds of Hope" closer to reality. The JCU students derived the title from a quote by martyred Salvadorean Archbishop Oscar Romero: "We are prophets of a future not our own. We plant seeds that will one day grow. We water seeds already planted, knowing that they hold future promise." For more information on 'Seeds of Hope' contact Doug Walton, Erin McBride or Rachel Giannell.
