George A. Lopez tells 'Why we'll never leave Iraq'
Earlier this month (Feb 5) the JCU Faculty Learning Committee for Peace Building and Human Rights at John Carroll, in conjunction with the George A. Lopez. Senior Fellow at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at the University of Notre DameProgram in Applied Ethics and the Center for Teaching and Learning, presented a lecture by George A. Lopez entitled "Why We Will Never Leave Iraq."

Professor Lopez, Senior Fellow at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame, co-authored Winning Without War, Sensible Security Options for Dealing with Iraq (2002). He has appeared frequently on news media programs and has testified before Congress.

In his introduction of the guest speaker, Associate English Profesor Philip Metres said the Faculty Learning Committee is working to develop courses and programs such as the Belfast Institute, which recently won the British-American Chamber of Commerce Achievement Award for educational initiatives promoting bilateral relations in Northern Ireland. A similar initiative is being planned for South Africa.

Peace building, Dr. Metres noted, "echoes the Jesuit motto of being in the world but not of it."
