| An audience at John Carroll
today (Mar 18) heard about the peace process in Northern Ireland from one
of the principal players in that unfolding drama -- Gerry Adams, President
of the Irish Nationalist Political Party Sinn Féin. He had been invited
to John Carroll by Daniel Bizga last year during an immersion trip to Northern
Ireland by JCU faculty and students, a trip sponsored by JCU's Belfast Summer Institute in Peace Building and Conflict Transformation (Pamela Mason, Director).
Gerry Adams visit to John Carroll was sponsored by the Division of Student
Affairs. Adams said that the members of the international community, especially Irish Americans, have a significant role to play in the Irish peace process and that he welcomed the opportunity to engage the JCU community in a dialogue. That dialogue took place in an interview by ideastream Producer David C. Barnett and a Q&A session by a panel made up of Student Union Senator and Belfast Institute alumnus David Schuld, Student Union President Dan O'Malley, and English Department professors Francis Ryan SJ and Jeanne Colleran, a Belfast Institute faculty member. The JCU trip to the six counties of Northern Ireland may produce yet more dialogue. "After each of our meetings there, I'd extend an invitation to our hosts that they might visit Carroll," explained Bizga, who operated last summer as the On-Site Program Director of the Belfast Institute. Adams took him up on the invitation and perhaps a member of the opposition may do so as well. |
