Dr. James Martin, John Carroll University Professor of Marketing, |
Cleveland , OH --Dr. James H. Martin, professor of marketing at John Carroll University , is the recipient of the 2005 Wasmer Outstanding Teaching Award. The Wasmer Award, established in 1992 to recognize teaching excellence, is awarded annually to a member of the faculty of John Carroll's John M. and Mary Jo Boler School of Business. “Jim appears to be a quiet, mild-mannered person, but the students who have him find that he is a very tough professor who challenges them to integrate difficult material, like statistics, into strategic business planning,” said Dr. Frank Navratil, dean of the Boler School of Business at John Carroll University . “They have to work very hard in his class and they appreciate that he pushes them to change their thinking about marketing problems and issues.” Not only has Dr. Martin contributed to student learning, he has also been instrumental in the development of the Boler School 's strategic plan in recent years. Dr. Martin's research interests are in the area of international marketing and the development of marketing oriented organizational cultures. He was chosen from a group of five candidates who received the most votes for the Student Business Advisory Council's Outstanding Teacher Award. Dr. Martin, who received his Ph.D. from Purdue University , was a Fulbright scholar and spent a semester teaching and conducting research in Croatia in 1998 while finishing an international research project on market orientation across European countries. John Carroll University , located in Cleveland , Ohio , is a liberal arts university grounded in the Jesuit, Catholic tradition. The university has some 3,350 plus undergraduates and just over 750 graduate students. The U.S. News & World Report's 2005 annual college guide ranks John Carroll University among the top five master's-degree-granting universities in the Midwest and first in graduation/retention rank. Originally founded as St. Ignatius College in 1886, the university was renamed in 1923 to honor America 's first Catholic bishop, John Carroll of Maryland .
