| An adjunct member of JCU's
English Departrment is among the finalists for the second annual Story
Prize award for books of short fiction. Maureen McHugh is the pen
name of Maureen Yeager, who has published 4 novels, a number of essays
and poems, and many short stories. Mothers & Other Monsters (Small
Beer Press) is a collection of 13 stories that Story Prize called
"elegant and insightful ... each with speculative elements that heighten
the dramatic tension and raise the emotional stakes." Her novel, China
Mountain Zhang, won the Tiptree, Lambda, and Locus Awards, and Nekropolis,
and also was a Book Sense 76 pick and a New York Times Editor's Choice
