JCU
celebrates MLK holiday with Reverend Joseph Echols Lowery |
A
man who stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Dr Martin Luther King Jr came
to John Carroll this week to keynote the university's celebration
of the holiday honoring the assassinated civil rights leader.
Rev Joseph Echols Lowery (at right), co-founder with Dr King of the
Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), presented "Looking
Back and Continuing the March for Civil Rights" Tuesday night
(Jan 24) in Kulas Auditorium.
In his introduction, Rev Valentino Lassiter (above left), Pastor in
Residence at JCU, summed up the speaker's importance when he declared,
"We cannot think of the history of this country, we cannot
think of the history of struggle, we cannot think of any type of civil
rights movement, anything related to justice, without thinking of
Joseph Lowery."
Combining inspiration with bluntness and humor, Rev Lowery, who turns
82 this year, fulfilled his promise to follow the advice of "Daddy
King" (Martin Luther King Sr) --
