Cleveland, OH – For the 18th consecutive year,John Carroll University ranks among the top 10 universities in the Midwest that grant master’s degrees, according to the 2007 edition of “America’s Best Colleges,” just released by U.S. News & World Report. The Jesuit university is tied for fifth in the region and was ranked second in graduation rate and 12th overall among universities selected in the “Great Schools, Great Prices” or the value category which compares academic excellence with cost.
“John Carroll University has so much to offer students from Northeast Ohio and beyond, and it is gratifying to know that our ranking reflects the value of the Jesuit education we provide,” said Dr. David La Guardia, John Carroll University’s academic vice president. “Year after year, we remain among the best universities in the Midwest, especially in the critical areas of academic quality, retention and graduation rate. This consistent ranking indicates that we are meeting and exceeding our students’ expectations.”
U.S. News examined more than 1,400 four-year schools, divided into categories based on guidelines established by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. U.S. News’ four categories are: National Universities – Doctoral; Liberal Arts
Colleges – Bachelor’s; Universities – Master’s (Midwest, North, South, West); and Comprehensive Colleges – Bachelor’s (Midwest, North, South, West).
John Carroll University, located in Cleveland, Ohio, is a liberal arts university grounded in the Jesuit, Catholic tradition. The university has some 3,350 plus undergraduates and just over 750 graduate students. Originally founded as St. Ignatius College in 1886, the university was renamed in 1923 to honor America’s first Catholic bishop, John Carroll of Maryland. John Carroll is one of 28 Jesuit colleges and universities located in the United States.
