GENERAL ORIENTATION INFORMATION
Congratulations and welcome to the John Carroll University Class of 2015. John Carroll is a Jesuit Catholic institution filled with many traditions, one of which is our orientation program for first-year students. Orientation is a unique opportunity for students and families to get acquainted with John Carroll University. Students will have the opportunity to meet with a faculty advisor and register for classes, meet fellow classmates as well as upper class students, and stay in the residence halls to see John Carroll in a whole new light, learning what to expect both socially and academically. Parents can also benefit from the program, whether this is the first or last child going to college, by engaging with several university administrators, learning more about the resources available at JCU, and meeting other parents.
Attending the orientation program will give students a head start on a successful, enjoyable college experience, making the transition in August less hectic and much easier. We strongly encourage both students and parents to start your John Carroll experience by taking advantage of all it has to offer. Enjoy the rest of your senior year, and we look forward to seeing you this summer!
ORIENTATION STAFF 2011
Looking for the bookstore? Not sure where the meeting room is? Wondering what you can get involved with on campus? For all of the answers to your questions, ask any member of your orientation staff. This group of remarkable undergraduate students is dedicated to helping you get to know JCU. They will be leading your small groups, taking you around campus, and participating in the fun night activities! Please ask questions...they are here to help you!
ACADEMIC ADVISING INFORMATION
You will be asked to make many choices during your orientation. It is not too soon to begin thinking of the areas in which you would like to take courses. You will have the opportunity to raise questions with an academic advisor concerning core requirements and appropriate course load before you select courses for the fall. If you have taken Advanced Placement tests at your high school and have the results, bring them with you. If you have not received them yet, tell your advisor which tests you have taken and he/she will assist you in creating a schedule accordingly. Also, make sure you have the results sent to us when they are available.
Parents and guardians will have an opportunity to meet with a faculty advisor on the second day of orientation as well. Students will then have an individual appointment with the same advisor to plan and register his or her courses for the fall semester. Students will enter the registration area without parents and families to work with their faculty advisor. Parents and families are encouraged to relax or participate in the on-campus service project during this time.
PLACEMENT EXAMS
Any student who studied Spanish, French, German, Latin, or Italian in high school will need to take an online foreign language placement exam in that language before coming to campus for the orientation. (If you took more than one of these five languages, you should take the placement test in both languages.) Please refer to your Enrollment Confirmation Packet for instructions on how to complete the exam and for a schedule of placement test deadlines. The placement test will help the academic advisor to determine which language class is appropriate for each student, and should be taken seriously to ensure proper placement. Please note that without the results of this test students will not be able to register for their required foreign language courses.
ARRIVAL
The orientation program begins with check-in, from 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM. It is important to arrive during that timeframe in order to take advantage of the University Resource Fair.
DEPARTURE
The orientation program concludes when the student has finished registering for classes, receiving his or her Carroll Card, and met with representatives of Financial Aid for an individual appointment. Students' registration and appointment times will be distributed upon arrival on the first day, so please do not plan to leave campus before 3:00 PM on the second day.
STUDENT FEE
An orientation fee of $325 will appear on your fall tuition bill, which will be mailed to you in July. This fee covers meals, overnight housing, staffing, as well as advising and registration fees.
STREAK WEEK 2011
Wednesday, August 24 – Sunday, August 28: Our Streak Week program brings first-year students to campus a few days early so that they can continue to get oriented to university life and to learn invaluable skills to succeed in college without the rush of classes. Therefore, it is mandatory that all students, both commuter and resident, attend all of the programmatic sessions during the weekend. Resident students will be assigned a move-in time for Wednesday, August 24 by the Office of Residence Life. Commuters will meet at a certain time and have a chance to get to know the rest of the first-year commuters as well as the resident students. Meals will be provided during this time. If you have any questions, please call the Office of Orientation at (216) 397-1983. Click here to view the Streak Week website.
