GENERAL ORIENTATION INFORMATION

Congratulations and welcome to the John Carroll University Class of 2012.  John Carroll is a Jesuit Catholic institution filled with many traditions, one of which is our orientation program for first-year students.  Orientation is a unique opportunity for students and families to get acquainted with John Carroll University.  Students will have the opportunity to meet with a faculty advisor and register for classes, meet fellow classmates as well as upper class students, and stay in the residence halls to see John Carroll in a whole new light, learning what to expect both socially and academically.  Parents can also benefit from the program, whether this is the first or last child going to college, by engaging with several university administrators, learning more about the resources available at JCU, and meeting other parents.

Attending the orientation program will give students a head start on a successful, enjoyable college experience, making the transition in August less hectic and much easier.  We strongly encourage both students and parents to start your John Carroll experience by taking advantage of all it has to offer.  Enjoy the rest of your senior year, and we look forward to seeing you this summer!

Looking for the bookstore?  Not sure where the meeting room is?  Wondering what you can get involved with on campus?  For all of the answers to your questions, ask any member of your orientation staff.  This group of remarkable undergraduate students is dedicated to helping you get to know JCU.  They will be leading your small groups, taking you around campus, and participating in the fun night activities!  Please ask questions...they are here to help you!

ACADEMIC ADVISING INFORMATION

You will be asked to make many choices during your orientation.  It is not too soon to begin thinking of the areas in which you would like to take courses.  You will have the opportunity to raise questions with an academic advisor concerning core requirements and appropriate course load before you select courses for the fall.  If you have taken Advanced Placement tests at your high school and have the results, bring them with you.  If you have not received them yet, tell your advisor which tests you have taken and he/she will assist you in creating a schedule accordingly.  Also, make sure you have the results sent to us when they are available.

Students will enter the registration area without parents and families to work with their faculty advisor.  Parents and families are encouraged to enjoy the resource fair during this time.

PLACEMENT EXAMS

During orientation, students will be taking two placement exams: foreign language and writing.  These exams help the academic advisor to determine which class is right for students in these areas.  The placement tests are not meant to intimidate students nor will they affect acceptance to John Carroll University.  They should be taken seriously to maximize the quality of education with proper placement.  Please note that no advising session will occur without the results of these tests which will be made available to the advisor in time for students' individual advising sessions on the second day of the program.

ARRIVAL

Image of Students Walking at OrientationThe orientation program begins with check-in, from 8:00 AM – 9:30 AM.  It is important to arrive during that timeframe in order to be on time for the opening session, which begins promptly at 10:00 AM.  Students should also bring their luggage to check-in, as they will be guided directly to their residence hall room.  Parents spending the evening in a residence hall can also bring luggage to check-in, as they will also be directed to their residence hall rooms at that time.

DEPARTURE

The orientation program concludes when the student has finished registering for classes.  Students' registration times will be distributed upon arrival on the first day, so please do not plan to leave campus before 2:30 PM on the second day.

STUDENT FEE

An orientation fee of $325 will appear on your fall tuition bill, which will be mailed to you in July.  This fee covers meals, overnight housing, staffing, as well as advising and registration fees

STREAK WEEK 2008

Thursday, August 28 - Sunday, August 31 :  Our Streak Week program brings first-year students to campus a few days early so that they can continue to get oriented to university life and to learn invaluable skills to succeed in college without the rush of classes.  Therefore, it is mandatory that all students, both commuter and resident, attend all of the academic and programmatic sessions during the weekend.  Resident students will be assigned a move-in time for Thursday, August 28 by the Office of Residence Life.  Commuters will meet at a certain time and have a chance to get to know the rest of the first-year commuters as well as the resident students.  Meals will be provided during this time.  If you have any questions, please call the Office of Student Activities and Orientation at (216) 397-4288.
