WELCOME FROM VICE PRESIDENT FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS

Image of Mark McCarthyDear Parents and Guardians,

We are grateful for the support you provide to your students as they develop into increasingly independent young men and women capable of being leaders in a world in need of competence, compassion, and conscience.  We recognize that the primary responsibility for your children’s education lies with your student  and you, and it is our hope that we are worthy partners in fulfilling this goal.  We hope to see students become individuals capable of contributing in significant ways to their own and others’ well being.  We aim to ensure that they have a sense of responsibility for their own lives as well as concern for those who are not provided the same opportunities.  We hope to inculcate in them a self-respect that can weather failures and mistakes.

The administrators and staff in the Division of Student Affairs serve students in a variety of capacities as counselors, health care practitioners, campus ministers, program coordinators, coaches, event planners, conflict mediators, student group advisors, public safety officers and resident directors.  Our work complements and expands upon the education students acquire in the classroom. Our efforts are based on the knowledge that meaningful engagement in the campus community facilitates academic success, the development of knowledge, skills and abilities, and commitment to the University’s mission. We strive to provide a balance of support and challenge in order for students to identify and develop their gifts and talents to their fullest potential.  Our work focuses on three goals:

  • To cultivate a vibrant, engaged, diverse and inclusive campus community
  • To develop students as leaders of character committed to serving others
  • To encourage active civic engagement and responsibility on campus, in the community and in the world

As a Jesuit institution we embrace the transformative nature of the four years of college and we seek to create a safe environment in which students stretch and challenge their minds and spirits.  In doing so, they often discover abilities they didn’t know they had and passions that were buried.  We are proud of what John Carroll students accomplish and grateful for whom they become when their lives reflect the mission of the university to “excel in learning, leadership, and service in the region and in the world.”
Thank you for joining us in this blessed enterprise.

Sincerely,

Mark D. McCarthy, Ph.D.
Vice President for Student Affairs
