Physics Department Awards and Scholarships

Department Scholarships

Lawrence J. Monville & Edward J. Hodous Scholarships

In 1977 several department alumni established the Lawrence J. Monville, S.J. Scholarship Fund by generously contributing and by inviting other alumni to contribute. These merit-based scholarships were first awarded in the 1980-81 academic year. The Edward J. Hodous, S.J. Scholarship Fund was established by Mrs. Robert H. Briggs.

Both awards encourage and give recognition to outstanding students who plan to pursue one of the major programs in the Physics Department. The average annual award per student is $2,000. Typically two or three per year are awarded to sophomore physics majors.

For further information and application forms please contact the Physics Department. The scholarship application deadline is March 1st.

Xavier-Nichols Scholarship

This is a merit scholarship intended for a woman who is majoring in Physics or Engineering Physics. Funds for this scholarship come from Alumni donations in memory of William Nichols, S.J.

University Scholarships

The Mastin Scholarship

Three Mastin Scholarships in the Natural Sciences and Mathematics, renewable in the amount of $10,000 per academic year for up to four years, are available to four John Carroll students intending to major in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics. Each student must be, or be qualified as, a National Merit Semi-Finalist, or have a minimum ACT composite score of 27. Further information may be obtained from the Office of Admissions. Application deadline is February 1.

Presidential Honor Award

The Presidential Honor Award is a prestigious academic award that goes to apporximately the top 20% of our incoming freshment class. Awards will be at designations closely representing one-quarter, one-half and three-quarters of the annual tuition. The scholarship will renew at the same amount for all four years. In order to be competitive, students should have a consistent A/A-average in high school in a strong college preparatory curriculum and score at least 620 on all SAT subcomponents and at least a composite score of 28 on the ACT. No spearate application is required. Students in consideration for this award additionally will be highly competitive in the Honors Program review.

Department Awards

Joseph L. Hunter Award

This is awarded annually for outstanding scholarship by a physics major. The winner is selected by the department faculty.

Lawrence J. Monville, S.J., Award

This is awarded annually at the departmental alumni banquet to outstanding graduating physics major(s). The winner is selected by the department faculty.
