Why
study Physics or Engineering Physics at John Carroll University?
You will get an excellent scientific and
technical education in a liberal arts environment that will prepare
you for almost any career path. These programs provide the solid
foundation knowledge of science and mathematics needed for a career
in science or engineering but, just as importantly, you will also
learn how to learn and how to solve problems using fundamental principles.
This, together with the breadth of a liberal education, will prepare
you for any career you may choose, even a career you are not currently
aware of.
If you come to John Carroll you will be studying physics in a student
centered environment with faculty who are dedicated to effective
teaching. All our faculty have worked to develop their teaching
skills by attending workshops on physics teaching and our courses
and curriculum are based on research in effective physics pedagogy.
A close interaction with the faculty is a hallmark of studying
physics at John Carroll University. All of our classes are small
and taught by regular faculty. Even the introductory labs are taught
by the faculty because we know that this is where students really
come to grips with the concepts of physics and where they need expert
guidance. Graduating seniors always mention the quality of the faculty
and their availability for help and advice as one of the department’s
greatest strengths.
Research is an important part of an undergraduate science education
and is a central part of educational mission of the John Carroll
Physics Department. All students are required to do a senior research
project with one of the faculty and many students participate in
paid summer research internships, either in our department or in
national programs funded by the National Science Foundation. The
majority of our student’s have presented a poster at a regional
scientific meeting by the time they graduate and it is not uncommon
for student to be co-authors on scientific publications. You can
find out more about the summer research activities of our students
at Student Research
Our alumni are scientists, engineers, and
professionals in medicine, law, and business. Recent alumni have
gone straight to the workplace in local technical companies and
international corporations. Others have gone to graduate programs
in physics, oceanography, materials science and many types of engineering,
including aerospace, biomedical, electrical, mechanical, nuclear,
and optical and engineering. Some of these students obtain a Master’s
degree in an engineering discipline before entering the workforce
while others continue to the Ph.D. In general, our graduates receive
financial support, covering both tuition and living expenses, for
their graduate studies. We have listed the post graduation plans
of our recent alumni at Where do
our graduates go?
If you enjoy science and mathematics and
are interested in a challenging education that will prepare you
for a changing world where analytic thinking and problem solving
skills are highly valued, consider the physics or engineering physics
program at John Carroll University. If you visit campus please let
admissions know of your interest in physics or engineering physics
and request a meeting with the physics department chair who will
be happy to give you a personal tour of the department and to answer
your questions.
