Woelfl Seminar on Public Policy:
“Reform Proposals for Elections and Policymaking in a Reprsentative Democracy”

The Department of Political Science presents the Woelfl Seminar on Public Policy on Wednesday, April 11, 2011, at 5:30 p.m. in the Donahue Auditorium of the Dolan Center for Science and Technology. This year’s seminar is titled “Reform Proposals for Elections and Policymaking in a Reprsentative Democracy” and will feature keynote speaker Dr. Larry Schwab, retired Political Science proffesor at John Carroll University.

The Woelfl Seminar on Public Policy was established in 1981 in honor of Rev. Paul A. Woelfl, S.J., the founder and long-time chair of the Department of Political Science at John Carroll University. The purpose of the Woelfl Seminar is to provide an academic forum for the discussion of significant public policy issues.

The following is a summary of the speech: Should citizens or elected leaders make the laws? Should Presidents be elected through the Electoral College or by a direct vote of the citizens? Should citizens nominate presidential candidates in a national primary? Should the Senate eliminate the filibuster? Should the powers of Congress and the President be increased or decreased? Should citizens base their vote on the person or party? Should Congress or the President have more influence on decision to go to war? Should the Office of the Vice President be eliminated? Should the ideological differences between the Democrats and Republicans be increased or decreased?

This event is free to attend and open to the public. For more information, please contact the Department of Political Science at 216.397.4311.
