Nursing at John Carroll University

According to the AACN nurses work in a wide variety of capacities in the healthcare team. In fact there are about four times as many nurses as physicians, and nurses deliver the bulk of patient care. Currently there is a shortage of nurses, and that trend is expected to continue.  This is fueled by numerous factors, not the least of which is the growing elderly population. This means that not only are more nurses needed, but more nurses with varying levels of specialization are needed. The use of nurses in more specialized area decreases the need for physicians and lowers the cost of healthcare. The preferred (advocated by the National League of Nurses) degree is the BSN, because this is the gateway to advanced practice specialty nursing practice. In 2000, the average RN earned about $42,782 annually, while the income for master's level advanced practice nurses was about $62,000 per year. Of all the healthcare professions, nursing offers the most flexibility, the greatest opportunity for advancement, and the greatest amount of direct patient care.
