Nursing
Of all of the healthcare professions, a career in nursing provides the greatest diversity of work settings, opportunities to specialize, and types of patient care delivered. One can practice nursing at the associate degree level, the Bachelor of Science in nursing level, the master’s in science level, as a nurse practitioner, a nurse anesthetist, a nurse midwife, or a doctor of nursing practice. Nurses work in hospitals as critical care nurses, operating room nurses, rehabilitation nurses, and private duty nurses in addition to the positions of “floor” nurse, triage nurse, or emergency room nurse. Nurse educator, occupational health nurse, community health nurse, school nurse, and office nurse are all areas where nurses can be found outside the hospital. Nurse practitioners are also able to operate small clinics such as those sometimes associated with pharmacies or that specialize in what is called travel medicine.
