Despite winter's return, steel begins rising over Dolan Center

Giant crane begins hoisting first steel girders into place Bill Heywood of Turner Construction and David Ewing of JCU
Ironworkers from Kelley Steel Erectors Blowing snow and 20-degree temperatures failed to delay the scheduled start of a major phase in the construction of the Dolan Center for Science and Technology yesterday.  The first steel girders were bolted in place by ironworkers from Kelley Steel Erectors, much to the satisfaction of (above, l to r) Bill Heywood, quality control specialist for Turner Construction; and Chemistry Professor David Ewing, Dolan Center users committee chair.  By the time the $66.4 million structure is topped off near the end of May, 1,300 tons of structural steel will have been used -- domestic steel, fabricated by Ferguson Steel of Columbus.  (The only delay yesterday came when the first truckloads were temporarily held up near Mansfield on a snowy I-71.)  A blue-and-gold "John Carroll" flag sits atop the giant crane (inset in upper left photo).
