John McBratney and Phillip MetresIn "Making Sense of September 11," a one-credit, pass/fail course, a faculty team from the College of Arts & Sciences, under the coordination of Religious Studies Chair Paul Lauritzen, leads students in examining the events of September 11 from a variety of perspectives and disciplines. Last night John McBratney (left in photo at left) and Phillip Metres of English opened a session on "the literature of loss" by presenting "Another Time," a poem W.H. Auden wrote on Sept. 1, 1939, the day Germany invaded Poland. The elegy, or lament, was one of the works most often cited in emails and elsewhere following the 9/11 tragedy, according to Dr. Metres, who said he found it "incredible" that so many Carroll students have been willing to take the course  and confront something so terrible. Last night's session also included a presentation by Grasselli Library's Marcella Milota and the presentation of students' poems under the direction of the several faculty members.
