'Clothesline Project' focuses on sex/gender violence |

The Clothesline Project, a
public initiative to raise awareness and to document the personal impact
of sex/gender violence and abuse, began yesterday and concludes today with
a series of events that begin at 11 a.m. in the Lombardo Student
Center. A focal point is the display of T-shirts designed by members
of the JCU community reflecting their own experiences with abuse.

All Clothesline Project events take place in the Atrium and the Lombardo Student Center. Thursday, April
18 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. The Clothesline Project display is
open for viewing in the Atrium. 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Senior Vanessa Strickley combines
her dynamic singing style with her talent on the acoustic guitar to create
a mellow, folksy sound with aggressive overtones. 2 – 2:30 p.m. Father Richard Salmi SJ, Vice
President for Student Life, discusses his experience as a counselor at a
domestic violence center in California working with males who were abusive
in relationships. 3 – 3:30 p.m. A JCU junior shares her own story
of date rape and discusses the possible correlation between date rape and
the portrayal of women in the media. 4 – 4:30 p.m. Carmen Lane, a representative from
the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center, discusses the prevalence of sexual
assault in the U.S. and explains the services provided by the center. 5 – 6 p.m. Open Mic: All members of the JCU community are invited to share their thoughts, music, stories and poetry surrounding the topic of sex/gender violence and abuse. Return to Top of Page |
