| With
the latest spring storm front moving through only moments before, the JCU community
held a double celebration late yesterday afternoon, topping off the steel structure of the
Dolan Center for Science and Technology, and announcing the public phase of the
university's $125 million capital campaign, "Choosing the Greater Good." "Today, we "top off" a facility that allows our students greater opportunity to serve their organizations, their families, their communities and their world," declared Father Ed Glynn SJ. "When it is completed in the Fall of 2003, it will be the finest undergraduate facility for math and science in this region and perhaps the nation." Pat Auletta '72, presided at the unveiling of the capital campaign theme, "Choosing the Greater Good," and spoke of the progress already achieved. "Because of the extraordinary leadership from Father Ed Glynn and because of the extraordinary generosity of many donors and volunteers, including the board of directors and the campaign steering committee that I lead, we are able to announce today that our capital campaign has already raised $103 million since the start of the quiet phase." But that still leaves $23 million to go, he added. "I hope you will ask yourself how important John Carroll is to you and give careful consideration to how you might help us reach this goal." Chemistry Professor David Ewing served as master of ceremonies. |

The Topping Off of the Dolan Center Thank you, David. Thanks also to all of you for joining us. These are exciting times for John Carroll University and this evening, a great evening for a great university, is one of the most invigorating and ambitious in our history. The Dolan Center for Science and Technology that is rising out of the ground behind me expresses not simply our continuous and on-going commitment to excellence but also expresses our continuous and on-going achievement of excellence. Thus we gather this evening to celebrate with this symbolic topping ceremony John Carroll's achievements of excellence. This evening of celebration is also a time of
gratitude. This Dolan Center enhances our ability to better serve our students, undergraduate and graduate alike. Serving students by educating for vision, for hope and for responsibility is the reason why the University exists. The Center itself is specifically about teaching and learning math, science and technology. It will be a place where students come to learn in new, creative and more interactive ways. The experiments performed here will open the minds of students and faculty members alike. This Center will be an incubator for ideas that help move greater Cleveland and Northeast Ohio forward. This Center will provide collaborative arrangements with others from industry and business to increase the speed with which new ideas take flight and change lives. The Dolan Center expresses eloquently and publicly the promise and clear sign that John Carroll more than ever is ready to takes its place in this region as a launching pad for talent and ideas that will make a difference in our world. The Dolan Center, when it is completed in August 2003, will be the finest undergraduate facility for math and science in this region and perhaps the nation. It will be spectacular. Again my thanks for all that you have done to get us to where we are today. We can be proud of what we are accomplishing together. Unfortunately, Charles and Helen Dolan cannot be with us today to sign the beam in person. We do however have their signatures etched into a metal plate, which has been affixed to the center of the beam. They are with us in spirit and we greatly appreciate all they have so generously done to make this moment possible. So without further ado - "Let's raise the beam!" Return to Top of Page |

The Capital Campaign for JCU It is a great pleasure and indeed a distinct honor to be a part of this celebration today. I am here today to announce the public start of another milestone in John Carroll history. For the past two years, John Carroll under the leadership of Father Ed Glynn, has been planning the most ambitious fund raising drive in the university's history. Perhaps this has been no secret to you. And how could it be? Even though we have been in what is known as the quiet phase of a capital campaign, hints that something big was happening at John Carroll emerged. A story about a $2 million gift from Jerry and Helen McDonough, a $3 million commitment from Jack and Mary Jane Breen, a $5 million gift from Dick and Yvonne Hamlin, a $3 million gift from Ed and Ann Muldoon and, to top it all in this quiet period, a $20 million gift from Charles and Helen Dolan and the Dolan Childrens Foundation that allowed us to reap so much and begin the wonderful building that we stand before today. It's hard to keep that kind of success quiet and so today - we go public - we go public with the announcement of the largest campaign in John Carroll's history. A $125 million dollar capital campaign that will fund not only the construction of the Dolan Center for Science and Technology, but also Don Shula Stadium and much needed endowment - endowment that will support student financial aid, faculty research and the many programs that makes John Carroll a distinct university. Because of the extraordinary leadership from Father Ed Glynn and because of the extraordinary generosity of many donors and volunteers, including the board of directors and the campaign steering committee that I lead, we are able to announce today that our capital campaign has already raised $103 million since the start of the quiet phase. $103 million! Many of the individuals who helped us get to that impressive number have already been mentioned. The Dolan Family, the Hamlins, the Muldoons, the McDonoughs and the Breens. Exceptional names in the history of John Carroll University, but there are many, many, many other individuals whose giving to this campaign got us to the goal of $103 million today. Individuals whose support to John Carroll University has been just as exceptional as the names just mentioned. Individuals like Jerry Murphy, Jack Kahl, Gerry and Judy O'Connell, Joe and KK Sullivan, the Tetlak Foundation, Ken Callahan, Jim and Jackie McDonough, Joe and Sandy Curatolo, the Sherwick Fund, Chuck and Nancy Geschke, the O'Neill Foundation, Jim and Donna Reid, Jim Mason, Jerry and Kathy Breen, the Ratner Family, the Winchester Family, the Sherwin-Williams Foundation, the John Huntington Fund, Tim and Jayne Donahue, Bill and Jenellen Hulligan, Andy Mulwick, Pete and Celeste Spitalieri, Terry Fergus, Al and Helen DeGulis and one bank that is dear to my heart, KeyBank. The list goes on and on and on. And we want it to grow! Over 150 individuals have come forth when we asked and said yes when we asked for their support. Yes they said, I am Committed to Carroll. But now is not the time to rest, as we still have $23 million to go. Now is not the time to look to others and assume they will finish the campaign for us. This is a Herculean effort that requires everyone to stretch, to sacrifice, to give not until it hurts, but until it feels good. I hope you will ask yourself how important John Carroll is to you and give careful consideration to how you might help us reach this goal. That is what the Jesuits refer to as "The Magis" - the more, the greater, the more universal good. Magis is a reference to each individual giving their best at what they do, reaching for perfection and testing the limits of what they thought possible. This is what makes the world a better place. That is what makes our university a better place and that is what drives our campaign. A campaign for John Carroll University. A campaign in which we ask you to choose the greater good for the good of John Carroll. Now I ask you to turn your attention to the Dolan Center, as I am pleased to unveil publicly, for the first time, the name and look of John Carroll's $125 million campaign. Return to Top of Page |
